Will a 10 speed slx mech work on a 9 speed cassette with a 9 speed slx shifter?

Yes...... If you have no other option. Generally speaking if the mech is more speed than the cassette then you could tune it to run most of the gears.
No - cable pull is different to 6-9 speed.
it'll work with a sram 9sp shifter and a small spacer on the clamp bolt, look it up
Aye, I've got 3 bikes running 9.5 speed with 10 speed mechs and 9-speed X9 shifters, and a wee spacer, which works absolutely perfectly- you'd never know. But anything else is a hellish bodge, 9-speed shimano on 10-speed Shimano will be out by absolutely miles, never actually tried it but if you can get more than a couple of gears to work I'd be amazed.
