Some time a go I bought some 700c WTB Dual Duty rims laced into Shimano 475 disc hubs.
I bought them to run 23-25mm road tyres on a 26'' frame as an experiment.

The wheels have served their purpose now and I was thinking about slapping on some 2.1'' tyres to try the full 29er experience (when I buy a new frame!)
The wheels seem plenty strong and the rim is no narrower than rims I have run in the past....so question is will this end badly?

yes - you will grow facial hair in some strange shapes and wear shoes that look like cornish pasties
you need some nice middleburn cranks on that and then at least you'll die in style 8)
you may run out of tyre clearance at the back tho

Christ, people pay Cannondale 600 quid or so for the pleasure of riding something like that and they only get the choice of black paint.

Not sure about the 29 tyres though, but I like the 700c rims on there A LOT
