I'm putting 1x gears on my single speed and i've just found an old XT mega 9 shifter in the spares box. All the shadow plus mechs seem to be 10 speed, will the newer mech work with an old shifter and 9 speed cassette?

No. Shimano 10 speed only works with a sram 9sp shifter with a 6mm spacer at the cable clamp.
