I think it's amazing - clearly you have an awesome, fun-loving wife and I think the photos are a great way to capture that.
Definitely in the camp of 'if you've spent all that money on a dress anyway, may as well get even more good memories out of it!'
Yep I agree, I think that's brilliant. I think I'd have kept it afterwards though, in it's trashed state, rather than thrown it away!
what a brilliant idea - what is the point in buy a dres sto wear once, those pix are ace
seems to be a bit of a theme today
(taken from dirt site here)
Just awesome!
The first piccy on the thread is superb.
Best of luck for the rest of your lives n all that - seems you both are a pretty fun loving couple so that's gotta be a good start! ๐
I love the biking a skiing pictures.
It was something I considered myself, maybe I will get hubby to take some shots riding the bike, you've given me inspiration. Just need to find the dress and shake out the cobwebs. It'll be a laugh.
Not keen on the last picture though, however I realise why you took it.
bunnyhop
do it, then post thie pictures, it is actually great fun, a massive faff, but great fun. don't expect it to be that easy though, it gets jammed everywhere!
That was why we never did it, the fact thay I knew my dress would get all caught up.
Maybe will take it skiing though. ๐
There's some pretty pious people around here today. Who says everything has to be used under the reduce, reuse, recycle mantra? It's their wedding dress and theirs to do what they will with it.
I think the concept (and photo's) is superb and the smile in the tomato throwing scene says everything.
Congratulations to you both.
We swam in the Indian Ocean minutes after getting married in a ceremony conducted entirely in Swahili and our outfits were donated (not that we had much choice) to the village elders. I really don't get the pomp and ceremony of getting married (or anything else for that matter).
Also, I think your photo looks more 'honest' than the Dirt version. Much better for it as well.
It's called having an opinion barca and I'm entitled to mine, sorry if you don't like mine but that's life.
I don't like or dislike your opinion Gary, in fact I love reading the various opinions on here about random stuff. I certainly respect your opinion and your right to express it but I do find it quite pious to admonish these people for doing what they've done with their time and property..
There used to be a GaryM bloke on the "old" forum who seemed quite happy to heat his entire garage because he left his biking shoes there and wanted them warm. Must be a different fella.
Sorry if this is a silly question, but are these sports your wifes real life pastimes? If so, then great and she'll cherish these phots for a long time. If it was staged and not the type of things she normally does then it's a bit naff I'm afraid. Obviously I'm aware that she probably doesn't normally do these things in a wedding dress!
Good shots though, you certainly have a talent for photography.
Edit; sorry, well done and congratulations!
Fantastic pics - especially the bikey one, obviously! I'm still desperate to shoot a bike themed wedding or TTD session - any takers? Email in profile.....
Bunnyhop..
Jane - you've got mail..... ๐
brilliant picture, brilliant idea
Most of us (me anyway) blow a lot of money on getting married. I'd feel no worse about wasting the dress than I would on funding any of the other bits
Can I just say how beautiful your wife is and that you're a very very lucky man ๐
Oh aye, and nice photies too ๐
The point of the dress is to provide memories. I think this dress has done this to excess ๐
You shouldn't have chucked it though - your daughters will be wanting to wear it after seeing those pics...
There is nothing in a wedding that includes RRR! As it is an extravigant once in a lifetime affair.
Too right . . . aside from the extravagant bit. 30 years for us tomorrow ๐ - I'll probably get the dress out, complete with 30 year old dirt around the bottom of it (not sure it'll fit but hey . . . ).
Loving the action shots - fantastic and what a great reminder of a lovely time! Last one makes me feel a little sad though . . . I'd have kept the dress, dirt 'n' all.
Yeah I agree, the action shots are great, but the last one I dont like.
Your Wife has just worn that dress on, hopefully, one of the best, most significant days of her life, for it to then be on a rubbish heap just seems wrong, like it symbolises the wedding didn't mean anything. Probably reading too much into things though.
Who cares what we think anyway? Great action pics, lovely adventurous wife, well done! ๐
I'm going for this, worrying more about wrecking the bike than the dress.
Marionheck-your wife does indeed look beautiful in all the photos, what fantastic memories for you both in the future.
Don't punch me on the nose or anything but isn't doing this months or even years after the event kind of missing the point?
I suppose though, each individual could argue that their point is just that, "their point"...........
The whole thing says to me that after all that has been expected of the bride and groom, the ceremony and all that goes with it...as soon as they got to be alone on honeymoon it was time to do what they wanted and doing it in the wedding dress was spontaneous and stuck two fingers up at the pomp and ceremony of it all, It became time to be "themselves" and the final photo says to me that it's the ultimate "sod all that faff that everybody says we should have" and "What's next on the fun agenda?"
Yeah, it's the spontaneity and two fingers to convention that so appeals to me in it all.
This is getting all too in depth for my simple perception, I'm off.
Congratulations fella.
The dress thing seems a bit odd, but don't mind me!
Great shots!
Love what you did and yes - great pile of top memories for you to keep...
Each to their own and all that - MrsMM's dress was in the charity shop within a fortnight... her decision
whereas I'm still wearing the suit I had made.....
Nicknoxx - love it, that is a brilliant thing to do.
Yes the wife does all these sports, she raced the mega this year (she wanted to do it in the wedding dress?!!?) we skied toured all around europe for 8 weeks in the van, and she is brilliant at throwing stuff at me. So a good representation I think
as for dumping the dress, it stank! we move around alot and we don't keep much stuff, so less to cart around.
thank you all for your kind words, and thank you those who think this is a mindless act of self indulgance killing the enviroment. Has been fun reading your opinions.
I love all the pictures and am going to proudly hang them up at home.
BUnnyhop - please put the pictures up, would love to see others. Be careful of the chain device and brake calipers, these where the worst areas!!!!
have fun
Well why not if that's what you want to do, your money, your day and your lives. Congratulations to you both.
There was a Gary_M on the old forum that was happy to buy Rapha or whatever it's called gear and pay a ton for shorts. Is it the same one or are we being duped by the name change flaw?
as an aside, sod a wedding dress - I'm gonna do it in my kilt - all on the same day. Ok, I may just have to get some bystanders to chuck tomatoes at me or maybe just walk past some in Tescos.

What's yer point caller?
Congratulations on your marraige. Photos look great, don't really get the destruction thing as it would have been better to pass it on but it's your money.
DeVs whats the significance in someone buying rapha kit in a 'destroying wedding dress' discussion?
gets the thumbs up from me, but a little leg in that downhill shot wouldn't have hurt would it ?
I was trying to point out the irony that someone who will heat their whole garage and neighbourhood just to dry their shoes and will pay extortionate amounts on over priced kit which is not any more functional than stuff at a quarter of the price, is prepared to try and lecture someone on wastefullness. It's like Nick Griffin extolling the virtues of multi cultural and interated communities.
I do realise picking Rapha as an example will upset a few of you poor sensitive little souls who have images to maintain whatever the cost. Sorry. I should have picked a better example like yumeya components.
Gary - it was a very expensive dress. Just out of interest, how is it a waste? Will she ever wear it again..... NO. so to have a load of amazing pictures and memories from it I beleive is a far better way to get value out of the dress than let it hang up in the wardrobe for the rest of our lives like 90% of the dresses out there.
Agreed, completely. Awesome way of having the memories, and a bit of fun.
DeVs do people spend loads of money on rapha kit then use it once and destroy it? I would have thought it would be wasteful if they binned it but how can spending their money on kit, then using it be wasteful?
Not sure what your on about heating a garage, didn't see that in your post.
I'm confused, useless point, badly made.
Without wanting to sound like a patronising tosser, if you read the few posts before the Rapha one Blackdog you'll see what I'm on about. For some reason this latest forum format does make it easy to miss posts and threads harder to follow. Bring back Usenet. It's a far better medium.
put the handbags away gentlemen
Well I for one thought the action shots excellent and you are a very lucky chap and wish you nothing but the best for your future togther.
That final shot isn't really my cup of tea from a purely creative/ aesthetic point of view, wouldnt want that on my wall, and hey, it's great that STW has so many eco warriors ready to save the planet ๐
Brilliant idea! I think the pics are great and very symbolic for you as a couple. People preaching about passing wedding dresses on I'm afraid the majority of people are too snobby to go for 2nd hand wedding dresses (NB I didn't say EVERYONE before people bite my head off!)! I love them.
My bike,
absolute quality! and I love what youa re wearing as well. I take it once married you two rode down the hill together?
fantastic idea, bit too late for me to copy now! well done.
Cool pics, isn't trashing the dress an "in" thing to do now - I've been to a couple of weddings in the US this year and the brides have done the same
Not sure, I got the idea from a friend who is a photographer. we just thought it woudl be a fun thing to do.
we called it "the Chronicles of the wedding dress" rather than trashing it.
Absolutely fantastic pics, and I hope the memories match. Congrats to the pair of you. You look like you deserve the best of luck.
We got married two years ago, just the two of us and two close friends, in Coniston, had a swim in the lake afterwards. For us it couldn't have been a more perfect day. Certain family members didn't get it and there's still bad blood two years on, but famillies eh?
If it works for you, causes no harm, then sod the rest.
