Since the other wide rims thread here is turning into a bit of a barney, I thought I'd ask separately for some practical advice.
I drank the kool aid and have some 30mm internal LB carbon rims sitting waiting for my new build. I'd initially been planning a 2.35 front (DHF, DHR or Butcher), it's a size I'm used to and the weights are a bit more reasonable than the 2.5s. However I'm now wondering if 2.5 might be a better bet in terms of profile. Back is a non issue, no way I'd get a 2.5 in there even if I wanted to.
Any thoughts?

You mean it looks wide at the carcass/sidewalls.
Wide rims + narrow tyres mean the height of the tyre is effectively reduced (meaning easier rim dents at a given pressure compared to narrower rims) and the tyre carcass is wider than the shoulder knobs (meaning the sidewalls are more vulnerable).
2.25 Schwalbe on my current 24.5mm internal rims give both of these effects to some extent and Maxxis 2.3/2.35 are slightly narrower than those. For 30mm rims definitely go for 2.4/2.5 Maxxis, 2.35 Schwalbe, 2.3 Specialized, etc.

This could be true. I have some 2.3 Geax Sturdys (they were cheap OK) on 38mm (31.5mm internal) LB rims and had two punctures in the widest part of the sidewall last week. Both appeared to be from rocks slicing them.
Are you sure it wasn't because you leaned over to look for some rare butterflies?

Look big but how do they ride? Have you compared them to a 2.5?
I'm using 2.3-ish tyres on mine, no ill effects to report.

How so? Unless the rim is actually wider than the tyre, this isn't the case- up til that point you're opening up the tyre which increases the cross-section and the height (though, by a very small amount).

Good stuff, thanks. I kinda have you down as the STW tyre guru so if you are having no issues then I'll take it as fine! Any noticeable comment on the profile of a DHF v a Butcher on the wider rims? I was going to go DHF/Ardent but wondering if just sticking to what I know and Butcher/GC since I managed to find one of the German shops selling the grid version of the Butcher with the softer rubber.
Running Ardents on my 29" Blunt 35's (id 30mm) and they work great. 2.4 on the front and 2.25 on the rear, both tubeless at low 20's psi.
I also run a 2.5 DHF on my 26" stans Flow rims and although it grips really well I have to keep the pressure up to stop it wallowing too much. I'd love to see it on a wider rim.
From the combo's you've mentioned I'd go DHF 2.5 and Ardent 2.25.

I've not had a DHF on mine- actually now I think of it, not that many tyres at all. Shorty, butcher, mary, captain, maybe a highroller 2.5, baron and der baron. So almost all in the 2.2-2.4 sort of range. It does swell out the sidewalls and I totally buy the idea that it makes them more vulnerable, fwiw. But that's about it. Slightly less pressure, more grip, no increase in pinches or dings.
From experience, I'd say a Butcher Grid would be a good bet - stiffer sidewall should support better than an Exo, which I find to be a bit floppy below 25psi.

Compared to a Flox Ex, they have slightly bigger sidewalls showing. They're still a lot smaller than a Magic Mary or Hans Dampf though in 2.3.
They're also still not 2.3".
The 2.5" one is a bit over 2.4" though, and looks a good size.
Run whatever tyres you'd normally use, just be aware that on the back you may slice them more - as the sidewalls protrude further.

I tentatively sipped the Kool Aid many months ago, and ordered some 24mm internal LB rims, in anticipation of having a bike to put them on soon.
Months have passed, I've had to put them on other bikes whilst waiting for a certain bike to arrive (see my posts on MTBR forum today!!!), and...
Well, it seems I got rather drunk on the Kool Aid the other night (hey, I've been waiting 3 bloody months for this frame!) and ordered some Ibis 941's for it! Overkill? Almost certainly. But they look seriously badass, and that's what counts!
Planning a 2.3 DHF up front and a 2.25 Geax Goma (TNT sidewall for extra protection) for mine. I know they'll be quite square, but that's the way I like it baby! Either that or when they arrive, I'll realise I got a bit carried away and bung the 24mm LB rims on and sell the 941's on. Who knows!?!?
