We will be in touch
Rev from er a few years ago, can't even remember! They might be 2009 ish. I read the confusing manual and set them up so that there was some movement when locked out, and a bit of blow-off. I would lock them out for road riding and on super steel techie stuff, to avoid OTB incidents.
The bike was hung up by its front wheel (as usual) for about 6 months or so without being ridden, and now whilst the damping works as normal (or seems to) the lever does nothing. I understand that oil drains out of places when you hang bikes up, but it's been two rides now.
Any ideas?
Oil maybe getting into the lowers via a leaking rebound seal head seal.
If the level is lower the lockout will engage a bit into the travel, you can check this by letting the air out and seeing if you can fully compress the fork as the extra oil in the lowers may cause a hydraulic lock before full travel is achieved.
The fork seems to compress fine. From what I can tell, it works perfectly but nothing happens when I flick the lever.
I guess it could be that there's no oil in the damper and the thing's just not plush enough for me to notice.. maybe air's leaked out of the -ve chamber at the same time... hmm.
Will try letting the air out to check. Or I'll just service them and see what happens 🙂
It'll be oil levels or an issue with the damper itself, a full service should sort it (and make them feel a bit fresher) if there are still issues we're just up the Valleys 😉
Ta 🙂
Oh and we've got new 'pattern' rockshox seals kits for the older RS solo and dual air forks and pattern dampers seal kits too 😀
LoCo beat me to it re the possibility of a seal. Have had this myself with Pikes and Revelations in the past.
So, I opened them up, indeed not much oil in the damper but also none in the lower legs. I didn't have a seal kit so I put it all back together with oil, and then I noticed air bubbling out of the top of the damper where the little brass knob is... looks like my damper is buggered, don't seem to be able to disassemble it to change those seals.
I'd noticed an oily buildup on the top of the damper leg, but it surprised me that almost all the oil's leaked out. It's stored hung from the front wheel so it must've been just gradually leaking out.
Still - I reckon it'll do a few rides before going again..
If you keep it right-way-up it'll be fine. If you need to hang it upside down then you need to replace a small O-ring under the compression adjuster to avoid topping the oil up all the time.
Oh I like the small o-ring idea.. obvious really.. I'm a bit more worried about crud getting in, but there was no sign of water ingress when I emptied the damper out, so I guess it's not that big of an issue.
If you did this, did it affect the poploc?
Very unlikely something will get in - certainly no particles big enough to cause problems. Main problem is eventually the damper stops working (when it runs out of oil) and the oil leak spills onto your disc/garage floor/car boot.
I never bothered fixing mine on my old forks, although I did have a moan to the nice SRAM folk at mountain mayhem one year and they replaced the whole damper FOC!
Sounds like a common problem then. Maybe I'll treat it like the service e interval reminder on my car 🙂
