Who has a Sunday best road bike?
Is it n+1 or a justified/sane choice?
Yes.
I'm sorry, what is "justified" business?
Not really, but I've a summer road bike, and a winter road bike.
Why?
Because I want to.
My grandad
Not really, but I've a summer road bike, and a winter road bike.
this. The drivetrain on my nice bike is worth more than my entire winter bike which is built of left overs/hand-me-downs/parts bin finds so owes me nothing.
I rationalise having a HT as well as a pimpy FS for the same sort of reason. Though Chris King, Thomson and Hope are pushing the "left over" definition a bit.
The brand new CX bike is just because. ๐
Yes, in so much its only used for racing and nothing else.
I'm sorry, what is "justified" business?
I guess there's a realisation that if I was to enter an event. The difference between a bit of a do-it-all ~11kg bike and a more race orientated ~7.5kg bike might be quite noticeable.
But it would end up being Sunday and event only.
Well I have a "summer" road bike that only gets ridden on dry, sunny days. For the days when it's not dry & sunny I have the choice of a nice winter bike with mudguards or a cheap fixie, also with mudguards.
Yes but never used to but having ridden my pegoretti through 4 winters it was too nice a frame to have rot away so I have another oversize columbus steel bike (a chesini) that will be used in the wet, it's not exactly a 'winter beater' as it's got force22 groupset, zipp finishing kit and will be used in the summer too.
When the DA/ultegra wears out on the pegoretti I'll put record on it so it will be a proper Sunday best bike.
I have a nice road bike but I ride it as much as possible, because it's so nice to ride.
I save the other one for the wet or when there's likely to be ice.
I have a nice road bike and then for "other" duties (commuting, bad weather etc) I have a choice of a CX bike or a SS road bike.
Yes but I sometimes ride it midweek too(only if dry) cause I'm a rebel ๐
People with plenty more money than me. ๐
Sort of - I built a steel Guerciotti Record to use for Sunday recovery and cafe rides. My justification was that I felt foolish bimbling along at 14 mph on a 4K carbon bike. In reality I just fancied putting a new bike together.
Got my 6 year old Wilier Mortirolo and just bought a Canyon CF SLX, so more by accident than design. Wilier = winter bike now with guards.
Yep. 653 Dave Yates bike that I've had since the mid nineties. Re sprayed a few years ago and running clasic all alloy 10speed Record. Not the lightest or stiffest bike but a great bike if you aren't hammering it.
Yes but only because I found a Storck frameset for a good price. Though I did thrash it through the rain on the chaingang the other day.
Whoops
Carbon summer bike for dry days. It's way too nice to drag it through all the wet and filth of winter roads, doesn't have mudguard fittings and prob not even the clearance for 25mm tyres.
Winter bike has guards to save me and clubmates from a faceful of filth + and more relaxed geometry + 25mm tyres for the rest of the year.
Singlespeed for commuting.
You know you've had a good summer when you look at the winter bike around July time and realise you've not been on it since March ๐
Just taken delivery of a Whyte Dorset to use through the winter and inclement weather. Took it out the other night on our regular Thursday night road ride, and I can confirm that 18.5mph avg on a 10.5kg bike is definitely harder work than on my 7.5kg carbon KTM! I've a feeling that it's mostly in the (overbuilt) wheels and tyres on the Whyte that requires the extra effort, but that said, come winter I'll be glad of it's (ridiculously good!) Hydraulic discs, clearance for big tyres and full mudguards, and wide ranging cassette. In fact, thinking I might put an Expsoure Revo on it too so it's the one bike that's just ready to ride, whatever the conditions or time of day.
Mboy, just been out on my new Saracen Hack 2, bought as a CX bike but currently sporting its OE 35mm slicks on its heavy OE wheels. It probably weighs close to 50% more than my 7.5kg carbon Lapierre, and is best described as entertainingly slow ๐
My winter bike is the 531c bike I got for my 16th birthday. In 1988. Still largely original including downtube friction shifters etc.
I do.
Crashtest - I'm glad its not just me that thinks the Hack is sluggish. I was hoping someone was going to tell me where they've stashed the lead weights ๐
Since the start of the year, with 1 road bike, I now have nearly 3 road bikes plus the Hack and a singlespeed.
Even in the rain and muck, I still want to be on one of my fast bikes. I save the carbon wheels for proper race days, but apart from that I probably just clean what I'd term "Sunday Best" a bit more than I would the singlespeed or the Hack.
You know what you need, a Volare with matching Enve forks ๐
I'm trying not to buy the Kinesis CX wheels Freeborn are doing 'cheap', they will undoubtedly drop a load of weight but my justification for buying the Hack was its reduced bargain price!
Yep. 11kg Alu framed, tiagra and oem wheel equipped bike for winter/everyday. 7kg Carbon framed, full dura-ace di2 with carbon everything else bike for holidays in the sun and special occasions.
Yes, I rode it today ๐ if you're going to do a proper road ride then have a proper road bike. a hybrid, yes you could complete a century on it but it wouldn't be great, same as hooning around in the woods, you could do it on a hybrid but it would be more fun on a proper mountain bike
If by Sunday Best you mean a nice bike for dry days (but not racing) then yes I do have one

If it's wet then the winter bike comes out.
Yes - Defy Advanced SL. It gets ridden in the rain, but not much over winter, possibly on dry club rides.
My race bike is raced all winter, however.
My commuting bike is used year round, including winter club runs - fixed wheel with mudguards.
I only opened this thread because I hope to see another picture of cheers_drive's lovely Rourke!
If I could afford it, I'd have one. In the same way I'd have a Sunday best sports car.
Sort of. A defy composite that I ride all summer but not in the wet if I can avoid it and it gets tucked up for the winter. Don't have another road bike as such but Croix De Fer serves the purpose from October to March.
TarmacWorld ๐
Yup,
I am on it today.
It's more my Spring/Summer bike than Sunday best.
I will be putting it away at the end of next month, this is after checking it over so that it's all ready to go agin next April.
It's not that my Winter bike is a slow tank, but it has more all weather stuff on it and is just a bit more robust.
Rolling out your good bike in the spring, for that first ride,is a thing of beauty ๐
Yep Sunday best road bike here. I have a winterised bike which I commute on and used for wet day rides and a dry day commuter too.
I use them a lot so don't really have to justify them.
Im building up3, yes 3 ๐ They are all circa 1950 British 531 classics a Bates BAR, a Paris Tour de France that has never been ridden (BB still to be threaded) and a Paris Champion de Monde.
Im going to ride the puka L'Eroica and a few other over seas events and maybe do the Tweed Run (for the craic) and as many sunny day UK rides as I can squeeze in. What I find interesting is the price of the parts from the 50s certain Campag stuff makes eye watering values on ebay !
