...is this ok? I've been using it as a degreaser on my rotors instead of getting 'proper' disc cleaner. Is there any reason to why I shouldn't be doing this?
should be fine. Any residue would be burnt off pretty quick. I use IPA (Isopropyl alcohol), does the trick and is dirt cheap.
Why do this? it might well leave a residue and ther is no need to clean discs unless they are contaminated with oil or similar.
You need a microscopically thin layer of pad material on the disc from proper braking
I only do it when I cock up e.g. spray GT85 near them and they become (Surprisingly) absolute shite
It'll be fine, it's not the best but it should evapourate off. Any residue left will be so small that it burns off.
Although, why? I've never felt the need to clean my rotors or pads with a chemical on a regular basis?

Oh you are so going to live up to this name!!!
Many years ago we had a mate who did this before a ride @ N-y-A for the 1st 1/2 of the ride he had almost no brakes and after we had thrown copious amounts of muddy water at them they had about 1/10 power but shrieked like a 3 year old at Christmas.
As a clue dip your finger in said white spirit and feel the oily shite between your fingers, TJ is right old pad material + a bit of gritty mud makes for the best brakes
I use meths (the purple stuff) to clean my discs if I get oil on them. But as has already been said they work best when not completely clean.
use meths, not white spirit. I generally only ever clean discs if they are squealing or if i'm replacing pads though.
tom....are you around either tomorrow or friday? fancy going for an uplift day somewhere? hows the brake?
