Just specing up a new toy - 29er hardtail for endurance racing.
I am expecting to use XT as much as poss for the groupset (2x10). But if I did decide to afford some XTR components, which ones are really worth it?
Thoiughts?
Prob shifters.
Shadow plus rear mech - the only xtr kit on my bike, would've loved the shadow plus technology to have filtered down the range before my old slx mech needed replacing though. Great bit of kit imo.
stevede - I saw the shadow plus but don't have any experience of it - what will it give me?
Cassette - saves a bit of weight, improves shifting.
Rear mechs - especially if you can get them secondhand 🙂
Only xtr that is worthy of using is shadow xtr and xtr shifters.
Chainsets are crud, - Cannot BELIEVE people rate them so much!
As for xtr front mechs, utter poo and xt shifts much nicer at the front.
not sure on cassettes as I wouldn't use anything but sram pc991.
Wouldn't spend on the mech myself, it'd just be too heartbreaking if/when I smashed it. SLX mechs for me. I'm sure the clutch thing will trickle down soon enough.
Shifters are lovely though.
Shifters are great, if you're going to adjust the position of them make sure you have the chain on the smallest sprocket.
As I found (almost to my cost) The bolt which fixes the shifter to the clamp holds the mechanism together internally, if you have any tension on the cable it can slip between the qtr circle cable guide and the base plate inside the shifter.
pedals and top swing front mechs...brilliant
All of it, if you can afford it.
It is lighter than anything else made by Shimano and as strong - although I use Middleburn for rings though.
Shifters do it for me!
BB from Rose so cheap why not!
Rear mech as it has the clutch, but that should filter to SLX / XT with 2013/14 groupsets
shifters,
cheap rear mech with xtr feels mint
xtr rear mech with cheap shifters feels pants
Your also unlikely to put a stick through your shifters.
I'd stick with XT, XTR is no better and lasts no longer, you're only convincing yourself its better because you shelled out the extra cash.
Trail version of the spd pedals
Just seem such a more positive engagement
Use the new customer facebook code for Rose bikes and they are same cost as xt uk prices
Also rate the shifters highly
Cassette - SRAM 991
Cranks. Stiffer, lighter, and longer lasting rings than XT. They shift rather well too, but don't come in 172.5mm any more. boo.
£17 BBs from Rose Bikes.
Hubs.. If you're happy looking after them.
TBH, with most of it the function isn't vastly better than XT, but the weight is, so the chunkier bits like cranks and hubs become worthwhile.
As for xtr front mechs, utter poo and xt shifts much nicer at the front.
not sure on cassettes as I wouldn't use anything but sram pc991.
This marks you out as an idiot, thus I am ignoring your post!
Hardest part to justify is the cassette IMO, although as b r says it's all the best stuff they do, none of it's bad!
I run an xtr shifter and chainset, I got a very good deal on the chainset otherwise would have stuck with xt, however I wouldn't use any other shifters now, feel and crispness of shift is fantastic.
shifters & pedals
Shifters, got them on both bikes. New shadow plus mech looks like a nice bit of kit, expensive but will be my next treat to myself, could get trashed first ride mind!
shadow plus rear mech, is a lot of money but great not having chain slapping around.
shifters & pedals
+1
the chainset is really very good indeed, for the low weight the stiffness is incredible and it also looks the part. ive been unimpressed by the shift quality to be honest and its not worth the extra over XT the shifters themselves are very plasticy and apart from the multi downshift feature just doesnt live up to the name this time round. bear in mind also if you upgrade the shifters you should also invest in the teflon coated xtr cables at £40 a set
Shifters rear mech pedals. Cassette/ chain is still SRAM for me
Shifters without a question.
chain, shifters, casette.
rear mech is fragile with the carbon plates, and next year xt will have the clutch thing
Shifters 🙂
Shifters. They last the longer than anything else & improve your shifting no end. Cranks, cassette & mechs needs replacing far more quickly (not so much f mech but r mech can be damaged relatively easily)
Really like the shadow plus mech, but you're right I'll be gutted if I snag it. Anybody mentioned xtr cables? Seems to shift better than the standard ones, plus they've got better sealing.
Just buy it all;-)
The hours spent ploughing through the net to justify any decision is time lost. Your time is more valuable than the cost difference between xt / xtr
Shifters only, xt rear mech, then the rest SLX
Love my XTR brakes, bought from Merlin @£200 for front and rear a couple of years ago.
Got a pre shadow-rear mech and it has been faultless for the past 3-4 years.
+1 for the cabels.
Still want to get shifters sometime soon , and thanks to the drift towards 10spd there are plenty of bargains on here 🙂
Couple of years ago bought some XTR qr skewers of here for a mate for a Christmas prezzie. Very bling looking things they were, should have kept them for myself 8)
Shifters! Shifters! Shifters! Beautiful solid shifting and you can upshift 4 and downshift 2 if you want. I hate going back to my other bike with XT as i cant downshift the same.
Cranks - lot stiffer than others and the rings aren't that bad for durability. As for those who moan about replacing them well remember this, you wouldn't put shit parts on a Ferrari when it needs them so if you can't afford replace them buy something else!
I'm running the XTR Trail pedals and really have been impressed with them even if ones like 520's etc work well.
I might be wrong but I thought latest 10spd XTR isnt compatible with other groups (differnt cable pull etc)
Rear clutch mech and the new brakes are v.good too
XTR cables and pedals +1. I haven't tried the shifters yet.
I'd stick with XT, XTR is no better and lasts no longer, you're only convincing yourself its better because you shelled out the extra cash.
So last the same length of time and are lighter - what is there not to like?
