[Closed] Which 29er rims for trailriding (maybe even tubeless?)

Hi there.

Which rims would you recommend for me:
- Aggresive XC/trail rider - likes to hammer the descends, but still likes climbing (hence lighter rims are welcome).
- I weigh almost 90kg's when ready to ride (including a full Camelbak).
- Tyres are minimum 2.25" wide and I'd prefer tubeless.

I have Stans Flow in mind, but have read, they can't deal with high tensioned spokes, which makes them bend every second ride...?

Thanks!
Simon from Denmark

Hi, I run sun ringle EQ27s like these, run tubless with a stans rim strip, not too heavy and I haven't killed one yet.

Mavic TN719's are very good, and can take a bit of abuse and though not ultra light, are light enough certainly (the 2 I had were 500g each when I weighed them).

As far as tubeless goes, well they're not tubeless out of the box, but a Stans rimstrip, or a 24" inner tube slit down the middle, will see to that nicely. I ran mine tubeless with big 2.3" tyres no problems.

Hope hopes on Stans ZTR, I'm 120Kg and they have been hammered and still true, great wheels indeed

I've just got a set of Crests on Hope Pro II Evo's, I'll be riding trails on them and probably jumping off things too.

Not sure if it's aggressive XC, but hammering down rocks in the peaks on my 355's hasn't bent them.

Velocity P35 wide as a wide thing so huge tyres not a problem and light and tubeless with a tape and valve al a stans.

failing that stans crests/ztr's are jolly good as well

Good experience of a P35 (waves at tazzy!); also Bonty 29er rims have served me well for years; wide and dead easy to set up tubeless.

Just gone for Flows on 29er myself as I have been so impressed with them on my 26 bike. 107Kg here.

I have a set of Crests and a set of Arch. I weigh about 100kg kitted up. The reason I have two sets is that I bought Arch then needed another pair for my wife's bike so thought I'd try Crests. Though I used the Crests over the summer and they were ok I've switched back to Arches due to me trying more drop offs and starting to attempt jumps. Were I buying again I'd either go for Arch or Flow. I also went for pro-loc nipples (I think that's what they're called) and am told a lot of the strength is down to the quality of the build.

Crests are not intended for an " Aggresive XC/trail rider".

Stick to something stronger like Flows or proper eyeletted rims like the excellent Mavic TN719 or you will spend half your time truing them!

Definitely Flows, go 36 spokes if you're worried

120 kilos and using 29er Flows with 2.25 Advents. No issues so far after a year round the North York Moors, wheels on the ground but not going out of my way to avoid the rough stuff. Only issue was finding tyres that fitted. Maxxis were fine, kenda SB8 were a complete no go.

Stan's Arch here, seem very strong. I bent a couple of Sun EQ's, admittedly through poor riding but they seemed to be made of cheese. No problems with the ZTR's and they do seal well, but you do need tape.

Arch wheel's spoke tension is normal, no probs. They seem bullet proof, I'm 105kg.

Flows have seen me right for a few years on loads of different bikes.
I have damaged one though after crashing and landing knee first on the front wheel. That pulled a spoke nipple through the rim but i dought any rim yould have survived that.

About 13stone and ride all sorts of stuff and not afraid of leaving the ground either.

Tazzy/Clink, where did you guys get the P35's from? JRA? Any issues with running them tubeless?

I bought it from JRA - tazzy got it off me. Tubeless seems spot on - no probs so far!

2 sets of 29r Flows on hopes, one geared and one ss set. One def built better than the other-needs truing every so often. Other than that, no issues here. Heavy rider 15+ stone kitted (tall not fat before you all go an a 'pie' mission lol )

Thanks for all of your input.
I'll give the Flows a go. Like, they're wide.
Cheers
Simon
