Going to build myself a nice 29er hardtail soon and im unsure which to go for, i have kind of narrowed it down to 2, but suggestions are more than welcome. Im going to run it with rigid carbon forks to start with, possibly changing to 100mm suspension in the future.

2012 Santa Cruz Highball (alloy)

2012 Niner E.M.D. 9

Well I'm intending to buy a Highball later this year, not least because I can spec a green/yellow John Deere colour-scheme to go with my new found appreciation for country music.

On a more practical note I've ridden the carbon highball so know the sizing/geo is spot on for me and it has the option of singlespeed dropouts so a little bit more versatile.

IvanDobski - What size did you ride?

I also have a XL Santa Cruz Nomad 2, so know that they are the business, quality wise and size wise for me,

Maybe better trying to get a blast on a demo through Alpine Bikes at Glentress next time im down.

Iv'e been told bikes are available now, but frames could be end of June! 🙁

Can't help but love the Hydroformed tubing on the Niner - where it meets the headtube - Lovely! 🙂

I've ridden the Large highball and it was spot on, I've also ridden the XL Tallboys which have identical seat-tube and toptube figures quite a bit and they're just a bit too big.

I've got an XL Butcher as well for comparison so in a similar boat to you.

(I'm 6'2 by the way)

I'm sure the Swifts are great bikes but they just look so dull. I know looks aren't everything but at least offer an alternative to those olde worlde pastel shades.

During a race here recently (the otway oddysey 100) I was behind a girl on one of those twisted tube lynski 29-ers, stunning looking bike (and not bad rider). I couldn't catch her up the hills (because i'm old and slow).

???

stevego - forgot to mention, my budget is £600 ish, rules out exotic Ti flavours 🙁

slinkybike - Have they improved the paint finish for 2012? I heard it chipped off very easily, but think that was older models.

Could you post a pic of your bulid? 🙂

What size is yours? - You said you might upgrade, so yours will be for sale?

Just got a carbon highball but as of yet it's not had a shakedown.

21 pound full build on an xl with training wheels fitted. Should drop under 20quite happily.

I am a sucker for Santa Cruz as i already have a Nomad 2, which is just bliss! 🙂

Just fancy trying a 29er, which will also double as a commuter 😉

I agree, it does look better, the pics of the On-one Lurcher in Orange/black looks nasty, geometry looks different to the nicer looking Green/black???

Going to have a think over the next few weeks.

The Ali one represents good value - iirc there is a June delivery date on frames though.

It's about a pound heavier than the carbon and a third of the cost. I think they will be popular!

Don't fancy steel much, my mate has a Cotic Soul and loves it / whips my ass regularly on it, but it would always worry me that paint chips would rust 🙁

I looked into getting a niner air 9 or a EMD 9 a couple of months back - but ended up getting a Canyon Grand Canyon AL 29er as its only £800 more than a EMD as a full bike! The frame has similar looks and geometry, with the added bonuses of post mount rear brake, bolt thru rear axle and internal cable routing.... If you dont like the parts on the 8.9 just sell them and keep the frame?

Forget that. I've an Orange Clockwork that has had paint missing for years, no problem. 853 is better still.

If i had the money and was after a full bike the Canyon Grand Canyon AL 29er would have been my bike of choice too - This one:

Trouble is, i have everything to build a bike minus Frame, forks, wheels and tyres.

I like both the Niner and the Highball A.

Oh and someone somewhere on this forum will have broken frames from most manufacturers. So yeah Niners break, but so do GT, On One, Lynskey, Giant, Scott, Soesh and so on!

well from all the riders I know, on-one have been bomb proof old gates, lynskey have been good (with regular paranoid checks for cracks) giant, spesh and old gt's that are still abused have also been fine.

niner steels seem to last really well, the scandium single speed and geared frames are made of cheese and many have been killed* 8O.

*probably why they have changed the design and material for new ones
