Any hints or tips on where's best to find some sort of bike I can tour on in NZ in January?

I'm probably gonna be starting in Wellington, so picking up a bike nearby would be ideal. Is there a local cycling group in Wellingotn, maybe? Local cycling forum? Classifieds?

Any info - much appreciated! ๐Ÿ™‚

www.trademe.co.nz the NZ version of e-bay, nobody here uses e-bay
The biggest cycling forum is www.vorb.org.nz It has a reasonable classified section.

I'm based in Wellington, if you want to sort a bike out before you get here I'll happily store it for you till you arrive

^ what he said. trail_rat bought a Kona from ChCh AFAIK, pennys probably as they direct import them. Have a look at TM though as its best source of gear. Lots of bike shops in Welly as well.

Got a jake from pennys for 400 quid,
Found anything second hand designed for touring attracted a premium a bit like the second hand campers over there. And generally in bad way mechanically

And if you are around the top/middle of the S Island from Feb 6th keep an eye out for the Brevet'ers - including me. 1100km, erm, event as can;t really call it a race ๐Ÿ˜€ Kiwi Brevet Site

I suppose so, its in the style of the GDR really. You 'start' and then you 'finish' what you do inbetween is up to you but there is a set route and you can't shortcut hence the SPOTS to make sure you go where you are supposed to as opposed to riding out of Blenheim, finding a winery, p1ssing it up lareg for 5 days then riding back in looking spanked ๐Ÿ˜€
There was some talk of compulsory rest time in each 24hr block as we're using open public roads and some of them are rural 100kmh ones with ****tard tourists on them who like to drive on the wrong side of the road a lot ๐Ÿ™„
Should be a giggle though. I've got my Tallboy all sorted with a nice fancy new rear rack (www.freeload.co.nz) and that and a home knitted drybag holder under the bars should sort all my gear. I'm not planning on any home comforts - bivvy bag, 150gm down bag and use of open barns is my plan. I will however endeavour to eat at least 2 meat pies a day.
