The missus has been making noises about moving back "up the road" to Scotland from the Isle of Wight. We moved down here four years ago to be nearer her elderly parents but haven't really settled. Only she doesn't fancy Glasgow, where I'm from, and where we lived for a while before moving down here. She's talking about Edinburgh. Her brother lives in Stockbridge. I like the idea of being nearer my family and friends in Glasgow but living somewhere new and having slightly drier, sunnier weather.

The touristy and residential bits of central Edinburgh have always struck me as the natural habitat of the seriously minted or their student offspring. i.e. Not me. But there are vast tracts of the city I don't have a clue about. Are there any "in-betweeny" bits of Edinburgh or the surrounding area that have a decent high street, local, etc, that are not somewhere you've read about in Trainspotting and are not beyond the reach of mere mortals on an average-ish wage?

Outside of the bypass areas like Balerno, Currie and a bit further Linlithgow are fairly nice and all within reasonable distance of Edinburgh. Corstorphine, Mornigside, Stockbridge have reasonable 'high streets' and are closer in to town but your budget may be stretched.

Further out (within an hour from Edinburgh) places like Peebles, Eddleston, Cardrona, Innerleithen are nice and benefit from being near some fantastic countryside.

Depends what type of house you are after and your budget really, I would have thought the house prices on Isle of Wight weren't that much different from the Burgh. www.espc.com is alway a good website for a browse.

There are plenty of gentrified areas now - Leith where I live is a classic example. Stockbridge is nice

Housing is expensive anywhere in the city and you are likely to get a flat not a house unless you are well minted.

Depends on your priorities really which areas suit.
