For many years now, I've been using an old Marin Bear Valley SE as a commuter bike. It's a bit of a bike of Theseus and is currently a single speed, I think only the frame and hubs are original!
Yesterday I noticed the rear rim has started to crack, it's a Mavic XC 717 32 hole.
Any idea where I can get a replacement? It needs to be a 26" rim brake compatible rim, ideally, with the same diameter/ERD (538mm/541mm?), so I can swap with the same spokes/nipples? Ebay 717 rims are either used (not interested for rim brake) or at a truly crazy price.
Alternatively, I have all the original parts in a box somewhere. Is there any value in a mid 1990's spec Marin with all original parts (SLX groupset, threaded steerer, canti brakes, etc.)?
Go and ask on retrobike.co.uk as someone will have a suitable new or used rim/wheel for not silly money.

check the dump or if there's any charity bike repairs/handout places near to you, I imagine they'll have a stock of replacement wheels lying around
Quite a few different options with a Google search (Halo T2, Ryde Andra 40, Sun CR18 - you get the picture!) but I think you are limiting yourself with the ERD. I would replace the spokes anyway as if you are not after anything fancy then spokes won't be more than a tenner
I found a brand new Mavic XM317 32h rim on ebay a few years ago, for very little money (£15 or similar) and local enough to collect. Kept it in the garage for a while, then had it built up when the old rim finally gave up the ghost. Worth investigating ebay?

Nope, only 36 and 40 hole, so would need new hub and spokes. Thanks for the suggestion though.

(Also - I noticed that the SJS site has two 26" sizes, the quick links at the top of the results take you to 26" 590, but if you go to the menu ribbon at the top, select 'Wheels' and then 'Rims - 26" - 559' you'll find the rim I just linked to as-well as a few others.)

I have a used 517 you can have for the price of postage but it's a bit worn. My rim brake brain has died from disuse, my best guess is it has a good amount of life left but it's a little "bowled" and centre worn.
Also maybe someone can confirm or more likely deny the old myth that XM319 Discs could be used with rim brakes, and you just basically wear the black off with braking. I remember hearing it back in the day but it does sound like bollocks. If it's not, I have one of those that looks good too

Loads of places have options, just need to accept you won't find the same ERD.
New bike number one choice obvs.
2nd one is any suitable 26” rim brake rim and ignore your erd requirement. New spokes aren’t wildly expensive - you can get decent double butted ACIs (that comes with nipples) from Cyclebasket. The website is super retro - but they are very quick to dispatch and get your order delivered - sometimes next day if you order early enough. I’ve been using the ACI spokes on wheel builds for years with no issues at all. I must have built at least 13 wheels with them - all but 1 of which have been mtb wheels which have had some hammer. I think I’ve only ever broken 1 spoke where a stick got jammed - snapped a spoke and an XT mech at the same time which was awesome. Not.
Halo one here for £35 delivered (I think this is rim brake):
20 quid would probably get you a wheel off of that marketplace or similar. I wouldn't be that ar5ed getting exactly the same rim width for a commuter tbh.
Alistair Gow at Wheelcraft is bound to have something lurking in his loft.
Big Al at Wheelcraft will almost certainly have something. At that age, I would just get new spokes and nipples for the sake of a few quid to avoid the hassle of trying to get a match.
I know he has 26 inch stuff in as I was up in the Spring looking at options for a wheel build for my old Fat Chance Yo Eddy Team with first generation XTR hubs. 👍
I'm using Ryde ZAC 2000 on my 26" commuter, laced to XT hubs. Very similar to Mavic. SJS have all the correct ERTO measurements. Loads of choice still.
