I was interested to see a new Canyon Lux Trail has just been released, but I have already discounted it as a possible eventual new bike as it turns out they have designed it so that you have to move the rear caliper to get the brake pads out as the pin location is right behind the seatstay!!!!
How could that have got signed off in this day and age? Just seems a remarkably stupid design to have allowed through.

Can you fit 200mm rotors to get around that? It is odd.
Watched the brake adjust video. Only time I've seen a manufacturer's pro mechanic video that makes a simple process look bloody awkward.
Is it all about clean lines? Or so you can have a low model rear caliper and not be embarrassed?

Specialized Epic 8 is the same. Not that much of a hassle really!
You could use a split pin and put it through from the opposite side

And as above - just swap the pin for a split pin or a bit of wire twisted together and there should be no bother.

It'll add in possibly 2-3 minutes every brake pad change, likely 1-3 times a year.
Discounting a very well reviewed, good value bike is more stupid.
Magura MT caliper would solve that problem.

Not ideal but wouldn't bother me enough to rule it out. I've never really looked at a Canyon and though "oooh, yeah. That is exactly what I'm after" but this look bang on. Base spec CF6 full build is around the same price as frame only Epic Evo or Transition Spur. Really tempted by it myself.

Disagree, unless I'm getting an amazing deal there's plenty of similar frames that don't make life more difficult (even if just by a little bit). Same reason I wouldn't want one with annoying headset routing or troublesome bottom bracket standard.
It’s not ideal but I’d say less hassle than cables through the headset.
A guy on pinkbike says the epic 8 and the scott spark (which model years is unclear) are the same.
Given the popularity of these bikes, I'd call it a bit of a non-issue.
Did you get this from Kazimer's pinkbike review, or did someone else also spot it? his desire to try some different brake pads means its likely one of the few times a modern bike actually has had the reviewer perfrom any sort of maintainence during a review period.
I really don't think at this stage of mountain bike development people should have to pay good money for such poor design, especially from a direct to consumer based brand where there is no retailer support. Not everyone would want to or be capable of doing this.
I have no issue with dealing with it myself, but it's not the 90's anymore where we had no choice other than to put up with what turned out to be bad design while everything was still being figured out.
I’d have to undo two caliper bolts to replace the pads once or twice a year? No hassle at all. Minor design issue at most.
I think it looks nice and fantastic value. I’d consider buying one.
Weirdly, Instagram just fed me a reel about this and all you have to do is loosen the axle and take out the front bolt and rotate the brake back a couple of cm and slide out the pin. So in practice, an absolute non-issue.
If you're replacing the pads then you'll be pushing the pistons back in and if your doing that you should be giving them a clean first and that is easier to do with the caliper free from the frame.
However it is also fair to say that modern bikes are not designed with home tinkering in mind.
What I find more frustrating is bike frames that prevent square access onto the caliper mounting bolts with a normal length allen key, as that makes aligning & tightening the caliper really annoying.
If a frame has good access to the caliper/bolts for removal it's not exactly a chore but I agree it does show a bit of a lack of thought/design as I doubt it was a conscious choice!
This is still a level of minor inconvenience I would take for a performance increase.
performance being lighter weight and or simplified rear brake mount not necessarily a measurable increase in speed for an average user.
minimal extra time, no specialist tool, no wasting other components.
headset cable routing (on a mtb) on the other hand, total cock up from the industry.

Ive both Code and DB8 brakes and the allen key will foul against the side of the caliper on the lower bolt regardless of what frame or fork they're on... annoying design. I cut down a 5mm allen so its just a stubby hex end so that i can tighten/loosen without fouling

Yep, stupid design... but the calipers are ugly anyway, so what's a little bit of rubbed off anodizing 🙂 Or you can use a ball ended allen key at a slight angle.
Chisel is the same, loosening the caliper does give enough access for the handful of times a year I need to change pads.

If you have to unbolt the caliper to change pads anyway, you might as well leave the wheel in
Surely a faff to then realign everything, or does every clean and massage each piston when doing pad changes? I clearly don't as I'm asking, but then I don't tend to have to loosen the caliper to change my pads.
I wouldn't buy a bike with headset cable routing but this wouldn't bother me too much .
I really like these kind of xc bikes on steroids . My riding he's definitely mellowed in terms of what I enjoy riding down and something like that is probably perfect for 90 percent of what I do these days .
