When not using ones Bombers for hand to hand combat, is there a competent shop/workshop around here as my All Mountain 1's need a service prior to going to the Pyrenees.

Bushings gone? Send to TF

Damper gone? Send to Windwave, in fact, they're usualy cheeper than TF, but dont give you a nice red sticker.

Anything else (oil or seal change) DIY.

Windwave,Portsmouth TF (Tim Flooks?) Bath IIRC not exactly local then. I've nackered too many forks to start changing bushes and seals myself. 😥

My experience of fork servicing by LBS usually entails them just sending to TFT anyway...

Ditto above, shops wont do any more than an overcharged oil change which you could do yourself.

It'll cost ~£5 to post them away, which by the time you take into account the effort/petrol of making trip to the LBS, and as they send them away will simply pass on this cost anyway, its easier just to drop them off at the post office.

I would send them to TFT, they might be expensive but they have always done a god job for me. Most bike shops send them away anyway as its just too much hassle for them and it looks bad if they charge the earth. Deffo wouldn't take it to The Bike Tree spoken to a few guys there before and they don't seen to know much about suspension.

....cough cough...."Deffo wouldn't take it to The Bike Tree spoken to a few guys there before and they don't seen to know much about suspension".....

Which few guys have you spoken to? The one that has been servicing forks for years and is one of the only Lefty qualified techs in the UK or the one that used to design TRA damper systems?.......

Seriously though - some fair points made.

If the servicing is serious - then it's more effective to go to the distributors for the 'help' they often give on replacement part prices (new legs as opposed to bushes fitting etc). Same for re-shimming damper cartridges....time vs core competancy etc. If your bushes need re-aligning then it helps to have the tooling too.

Sleeve services, Can services, oil changes, foam rings etc and all that good stuff.....if your LBS are helpful then it's often quicker for them to strip the parts off, do the work in-shop and get you rolling quicker. We carry all of those bits and are doing them daily.

We can also re-shim speed stacks, help play with viscosities and I throughly enjoy (perhaps too much) - getting bikes as dialled and as balanced as I can.

BikeSheff - one post and only a member for a week....I'm suspicious.....you're not working for the enemy are you??? 😀

SigmaF - The Enemy are always watching...... Haha Na used to work for a well know bike shop in Sheff a few years ago but ssssshhh had to change my profile as word got out it was me, I didn't have many good words to say about them after they let me go as they so nicely put it (not bitter at all). Just a guess here but I take it you are something to do with the shop I mentioned earlier. Must have caught your guy on a bad day don't know who he was but remember he had scruffy hair. Now I know you have such skilled suspension technicians I'll make sure I try you first next time.

Never trust a bike tech with scruffy hair.

How does a request for recommendations for a half decent workshop move to discussion about the mechanics hair style? All I want is someone to competently take my forks apart without finding they need a 27.2mm non chamfered deep socket half way through the job and spend 3 weeks sourcing one, suck their teeth about the lack of tlc they have been given thus far, decide there is nothing dramatically wrong with them as the rider is obviously a fairy, change the oil and dust wipers make sure the damper rod is working properly and phone me to pick them up the day after. Is that too much to ask?
Oh and be within half an hour of me in Barnsley.
I dont care if they look like a gonk as long as they can do the job.
