Looking for something that's fun for me and rideable for the girlfriend. We've been getting her up to speed at Hamsterley and she's riding all the red and black stuff no bother so we want to branch out and explore somewhere new.
Guisborough is just down the road and I've never ridden there. I know there's loads of trails there and there's loads of good looking stuff on Youtube. I just have no idea how to access it.
Should we park the van in Giz or Ayton? Is it a small area to play in and repeat stuff or should we try a big loop? Anything to avoid?
Cheers
If you want a nice XC ride with a mix of ups and downs then over the moors from Guisborough to Great Ayton round Captain Cook's monument is a classic. A stop at the Kildale tea rooms is a must.
There's loads of cheeky trails in Guisborough Woods (my hometown), many quite steep and technical, but you'll benefit from either using Strava to locate them or riding with a local as most is very cheeky.
Good places to park are the Pinchinthorpe visitor's centre or up near Hutton Village if you're on the Guisborough side, or up near Captain Cooks monument over in Great Ayton.
Thanks for that, that's a good starting point. I'm hoping to get some miles under our belts and take in some scenery so it feels like a full day out, then if we stumble across something steep and technical to amuse myself on that would be a bonus ๐ I'm dying to get away from trail centre stuff.
Or you could head over to Clay Bank car park above Great Broughton and from there there's all sorts of options out and over the moors, from landrover tracks your nan could ride to lots of steeper (and cheekier) stuff. It's the moors, spread your map out and explore.
If you want scenery and a mint ride then go to Wensledale/Swaledale/nidderdale etc , and there still on the doorstep .
Nowt against the NY moors but the dales blows it away easily .
no way i find the dales a barren wasteland of boredom.

All within easy riding distance
If you live in Great Ayton you can ride from there. Go upto Captain Cooks monument then down and up onto the moors behind Guisborough forest, from there you can head into the forest and maybe along to the top of Highcliff Nab. There are so many trails around the area you're spoilt for choice (it should be your default riding area :D) but maybe for starters check out Stripes, The Secret Path, Les 1,2,3 and Nomad on Strava and join them up into a ride.
Also Strava Global Heatmap is your friend ๐
I'm meeting a few mate's on wed evening if you want to join us. Starting from Great Ayton and doing a 20 mile loop. Happy to show you a few cheeky trails. Most of them will be steep and technical. Lights will also be required.

Fight amongst yourselves. Swaledale is great in winter cos it doesn't get as clarty as the NYM & if you find the dales a 'barren wasteland of boredom' I reckon your'e riding in the wrong places.
I think we'll be on the moors on Saturday.

Sorry we're about 40 minutes up the road. I can only wish I had a forest on my doorstep.

That sounds fun! But I can't make it during the week, sorry. I was just sorting my illumination out today as well.
Thanks for the tips everyone, I was just looking for a general guide really, I don't mind exploring. As long as we're in the right area.
I just downloaded that Strava malarky to see if that helps.
