I'm aiming to get mine going again tomorrow.
nice work, what was the bridge built for? (I mean for what to cross the water)
Never underestimate the power of the "fat" side... 😉
First test flight yesterday on the new rig and its amazing on the dunes 😀

Spill the beans, just how good is it? Big, fat & floaty?
I dunno how any cyclist checking out this thread could be a "hater". They just look like massive fun to me! (adds fatbike to list)
Bike looks great Bruce .
Motorman when I was a wee boy and my folks took me the Lossie beach I had to close my eyes crossing that bridge as the gaps between the slats seemed massive. Lossie east beach looks a lot smaller now .
Rigid fat bikes will soon be old hat. I mean just look back 20 years...
Bruce/Coastkid did you get my mail? Got my Black Ops last weekend, first beach adventure on Sunday
Most folk will not get the differance MM, unless they are already riding a fatty on the beach. It is a lot more noisy on tarmac riding to the beach!, and on tarmac its tyres feel more squirmy - until you get onto the soft stuff, then it flies!, it is lighter than a pugsley and seems to fly along nicely on the beach, the float on really soft sand is unreal!, for beach riders its a no brainer, for all round riding then 3.7 tyres will mostly be better, can`t wait to try out its floating potential in warmer weather! 🙂
Hi Pigface, no not got any mail here,
Coastkid mmmmm don't know what happened to that then, ok mate will re send it are yu t the same address?
Aye Pigface wwwDOTcoastkid71@yahooDOTco.uk 🙂
Coastkid - Any news on "The Fat Bike Gathering 2012" this summer?
Is that tartan ribbon on the wheels 8) 😯
Aye its tartan MM 😀
Up at 4.30am top go ride this beast
Andy & Jane are organising something this year John, no dates yet, Yorkshire Dales area 🙂

ok I understand.. 😥
I did my best with my funds 😥 😥
want to be one 'of the gang' one day.... 😥
I'm thinking of one day around Rothiemurchus/Inshriach/Feshie (I love it down that way, regardless of how many times I've been) but was also thinking up Moray Coast somewhere. A decent day ride would be ideal, with an idea of what sort of tide I should be looking at (so I can play the "when" bit!)motorman - Member

Fell in love with the Salsa fatbike at the London bike show last month
Really wanted one, but couldn't justify it.....until a tough days riding in Swinley with 3" of snow earlier today
Surely this is reason enough to buy one??
They look utterly ace!!!
you can be an honorary member for your efforts then 😆
Really wanted one, but couldn't justify it
Can you afford to buy one without having to sell the wife and kids?
If so what more justification do you need. 😉
I would be looking at Burghead to Findhorn, or culbin sands for a day trip.
Burghead to Findhorn is a good option at low tide for a good beach run to Finhorn, fill up on Coffee/cake, then you have the option to return via the dunes & forest. Can make a day out of it if the pace is easy going.
Lossiemouth would make a good base for the day, then take East beach in morning & West beach in afternoon.
Culbin is worth going if you take a days supplies with you, as there is nowt there. Work your way through the forest until you drop onto the beach & flats, then ride till the sun sets! Really needs to be planned around low tide, as the is some fantastic riding, but some parts do get cut off when the tide comes in (quickly) which results in a long detour along the sand bar.
It is a great place & well worth a visit 8)
Burghead to Findhorn at high tide
Culbin
From last year's Lossie to culbin bivi trip...

No wife or kids to sell - but £1.5K for a bike i'll use twice a year is very extravagant!!
The sensible person in me says build a nice 120mm travel bike fro local trails, but the biker in me says that i need a Fatty 😀
but £1.5K for a bike i'll use twice a year is very extravagant!!
believe me once you've gone fat there's no going back.
they are great fun whatever trails your on
Hmmm, reading the Salsa website...
"Want your Mukluk 3 to be more than one bike? Turn it into a 29er mountain bike with a switch in wheel set. The frame is front-suspension compatible as well."
So could justify it by also getting a 29er - 2 bikes for the price of one (everyone tells me that they're great, but not sure yet)
Becoming more tempting 😈
Seroiusly. After you've had a few rides on a fatbike it's all you'll want to ride.
They're not fast but by **** they're good fun.
I think people classing them as a bike that you can only ride in snow is the biggest mistake that people that have never tried one make.
You wouldn't believe the kind of rocky techy trails you can climb on these things. If you can keep pedlin you'll get up it.
If your life doesn't revolve around going as fast as possible on groomed trails, then a fatbike is a brilliant option. Smell the flowers, enjoy the view.
There's no way I'd have bought and built a Fatbike just for the occasional snowy day.
Epi do you always have to polarise this? A fat bike does not replace a std mtb for anyone bar you!
And while my fatbike (if I ever get it working again) is for all the riding stu suggests, I'll not be selling all my other off road bikes just yet thanks - try cornering at 20+mph at <10psi for starters.

unfortunately i had to sell a child to go half fat, the rest of the family will be going soon 😉

Epi do you always have to polarise this?...
Was I? - not intentionally. Sorry - I like all sorts of bikes.
Actually I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts on your bike as a 29er and a comparison to it as a fat because it will be as direct a comparison as possible of like for like in terms of bike geometry etc (apart from the wheels).
If I seem enthusiastic it's because I like to take my bike off the tracks and my mtbs weren't so good for that. Not everyone needs a race weapon which seems to be the trend in mtb marketing these days.. Sort of RSF rather than XC mindset.
I'm actually thinking of running 26" wheels on it...would sort the bb height issues 😀
Thing is I can't even experiment without building a wheelset, offset rear and Maverick front.
Narrowmindedly didn't look at this til today. 😳
Motorman ! I'm sure I shouldn't like that. But, I do...A lot. 🙂
I chose the right week for my weeks holiday, nothing to do but cruise on the coast 🙂
Mud free and just an airline clean and relube of Squirt each evening, yesterdays ride i tried to film the float of the new Moonie, at the start of the film look at the footprints, then the tyre prints, loads of float 🙂
lovin this bike, harder work on tarmac than the pugsley (expected) but unreal on real soft sand and dunes...
So, you lot run less than 10psi, right? What happens if you run say 20 or 25?
No one's ever tried....you're knackered after 8psi TBH.
LOL Al
I usually ride at 8 psi on 3.7" and 6 psi on 4.7" on the beach,
I put 25 psi in my pugsley to ride the 10 miles west on the road to the coast once when the car was off the road. I bunny hopped a kerb and clipped it and the rebound nearly spat me off
Caught the ERC chain gang one night east of Drem and stuck behind for about 200 yards 🙂 they were all looking up from my tyre drone
That's strange Bruce. The only drone I associate you with is your voice......

Awesome video!
Where was it filmed?
How come i've not seen anyone using SPDs on a fat bike?
Most of them are noobs.
Does anyone know anywhere where i could rent one?
Not sure if anyone has posted anything about the fat lefty conversion yet, so I will.
How much cider can you get hold of? 😉Does anyone know anywhere where i could rent one?
Does Thebikechain have one?
Suss fattys are the future for trail fattys.

Film is around Spike Island at John Muir Park at Dunbar, East Lothian.
Google Earth Dunbar 🙂
For tea & cake and a bottle of Strongbow you can ride a 18" pugsley here 🙂
I ride flats as we often ride real greasy rocks exposed at low tide, oh and i ride flats now on all bikes now 🙂
Boltonjon... We have a pugsley demo down in swanage...but you are probably nearer sideways tim... He has a pugsley.
I've also got mukluks in stock, so can build one up if you wanted to test ride it.
Hey Bruce, I spent the afternoon in the woods next to there yesterday afternoon with my daughter.. such a good day.. we both have so many childhood memories of John Muir Country Park.. happpy times!! 😀Film is around Spike Island at John Muir Park at Dunbar, East Lothian.

ps. spotted loads and loads of fatty friendly swoopy single track in those woods, I'm sure you'll have ridden it all.. kinda made me want to buy a mini moto 😉
how good would a wee moto be in Butterdean?
and just how illegal is it to beach ride on one?
hmmm... *checks bank account*
Would be mega illegal GW
But... no one would hear you at night on one of these with a couple of Magicshines up front 😉
seen those before! pretty ****ing tempting, eh?
Wanna start a new niche?
go on go on go on.... y' know you want to 😉
