Looking at the budget end of the spectrum, about £150 for a set. I've always had decent wheels (hope pro II/flows/719 etc) but a friend has asked for buying advice and am wondering whether factory built wheels are good enough for what he wants.
Trail centre/FoD DH, yearly alps trip is the riding so I was thinking of merlin cycles-deore hub with XM319 front rim/EN521 rear? Maybe go superstar for lighter hubs with cartridge bearings.
Does anyone like mavic/shimano have anything suitable?

You could try and find a wheel builder to do him a set of Mavics on Novatech hubs? They'll be similar to a superstar set, but probably better built.
