Why don't we use machine alloy wheels like those found on motorbikes? not the same size or weight as on a motorbike, but as a step orward from hubs/spoke/rim set up we use at the moment?

I don't think you could get them light and strong enough - motorbike alloys are lighter than spoked wheels - but by the time you scale them down to bicycle weights they would be too floppy / week
