Got a set of Novatec hubs winging their way to me, and a pair of rims.

Just to get the spokes - where do you get them from these days?

I priced up 64 Sapim D-Light on JustRidingAlong with nipples comes to about £40.

Is that a decent price?

Cheers.

I've been using the D-Light's from JRA - they build up well and I've not had any breakages - they're a good price compared with the alternatives, too.

Spa cycles every time for me...either sapim leader for a strong build (for me) or sapim race for anyone else

cyclebasket for ACI. postage is relatively high. so it helps if you can get 3-4 wheels worth at a time.

Germany usually. Rose, ActionSports, Bike24. whoever is cheapest. Rose are cheap, but stock isn't all that, didn't do black Revolutions last time I looked.

Germany.

Also known as googling the length and spec and choosing the cheapest.

Only issues I've found is that some sites will only sell you 36 of a certain length. If you only need 32 then the saving per spoke can be eaten up by having to buy 4 more than you need.

JRA will happily sell you any qty (I usually buy 33 so I have a spare).

cyclebasket for ACI.

Ditto. ACI are pretty cheap (pack of 10 £2.10) 2/1.7/2

but they are a lighter gauge than the sapim race and dt swiss competition
(2/1.8/2)

and they are only 0.05mm thicker in the middle than the d-light and £13.44 for 64 🙂

As above, Germany. Much cheaper than anyone in the UK, generaly.

Last time I built a set of wheels, I went into a very highly regarded central London bike shop, and was prepared to pay the extra to support UK businesses blah blah; they didn't have 2 of the 3 lengths I needed (fairly common lengths), in stock, and told me I'd have to pay for a box of 100 if I wanted them ordered in! Whilst being happy to sell me 32 (from a box of 100) of the length they did have in stock. 🙄

Oh, and they wanted about £1.20 per spoke. I think I paid about 55p each including nipples, from Germany. They arrived 2 days after ordering, whereas the London shop would have been at least a week or more.

Its been done a million times, but has anyone got a link to a good wheel building guide for someone who has only ever built one wheel 10 years ago?

Roger Musson is the standard reply.

Although I have the Gerd Schraner book and I like his spoke lacing method - it's far easier to grasp and the hub logo lines up with the valve hole every time 🙂
