What's the largest tyre width that would sit on a 17mm rim please?

Back in the day we used to run 2.1in Specialized Ground Controls on re-rolled Mavic MA40 road rims and "love the rounded profile".
MA40s are 19.5mm outside width. Is your 17mm internal or external?

2.35 Nevegals (ie, actual 2.35 not rubber-ruler 2.35) worked fine for me on 717s. While ago now and tbh I never rode them [i]that[/i] hard, but I never noticed a downside.
What I found interesting was that the Mavic website says up to 2.1, but the rim sticker said up to 2.3.
