49.7mph Coming down Cefn Bryn on Gower. Tailwind on my MTB.
I dont know for sure, I've only recently got a speedometer. I'd say going down kirkstone pass on my road bike.
42mph on the road, i'll rarely top 30-35mph off road even on fireroads, tbh i've not got the balls to go much faster, i'm much slower on single track obviously.
55 mph and change coming down Slack Hill towards Chesterfield on my road bike. It was scary.
nine and a half inches.
55mph down Cromford Hill in Derbyshire.
Scary fast, on a 45lb DH bike, down kirkstone pass. Thank kcuf for hydraulic disk brakes to stop.
48 in a 30 😎
Must have gone faster on Alpine descents tho.
45mph ish on the solo,55+ on the tandem
The speedo broke.
TJ needs to re-calibrate his wheel size.
I've noticed on the rough stuff I regularly hit a peak speed around 22mph but when it's smoother I reach the low 30s. Done a bit over 40mph on-road and it felt very slow in comparison! That's on a 100mm HT using GPS speedo.
55?? sounds like brown trousers time...
a pure million miles an hour man
Overtook some one doing 48.5 coming down from Hartside pass on a MTB doing the coast to coast a few years ago. That felt fast on a stable bouncy bike so I don't know what 60 on some taught road bike must feel like!
52 on road in the UK, 55-ish on alpine descents
45mph - on a completely flat road*
*Drafting a big truck on a main road in Spain.. yes dangerous
50.0mph down Wessenden Head Road near Meltham (mind the cattle grid) on a mountain bike with a massive tailwind.
After most rides on the Quantocks I hit between 45 and 50 mph going down Cothelstone Hill, I've been doing it for so many years I take it for granted. It's one of the reasons I couldn't do without a 44 tooth outer ring.
Fastest offroad, 39.8 mph Triscombe Combe.
only 47mph for me going down terrington bank on the road bike, good thrill though 😆
Mates speedo had a max speed of 57 mph on one big downhill in the alps and I had passed him on the fastest part quite a bit quicker, so not sure but was still buzzing several hours later, I'm guessing 65 70 ish,
I was properly 'aero tucked' so thinks it's possible.
48.9mph out the bottom of the French National DH track into Linderettes.
We tried, and tried to break the 50mph barrier, but to no avail. It was pretty scary though looking back.
Caveat: all measured on a bike speedo, so likely to be inaccurate.
63mph. Holme Moss to Woodhead.
I've also recorded 61mph in the Pyrennees and regularly record high 40s and low 50s on UK descents.
All on a road bike. Becoming a parent has slowed me down a lot.
fastest on an mtb will be that road coming off walna scar back into consiton. that is a massive brown trousers moment when you think what would happen if the brakes were to stop working.

That's just over a mile from where I live. Fastest I think I've done down there is about 45mph on a P7. The cattle grid (on a blind bend) really puts a spanner in the works. Get down to about 30 for that and then speed up again into Meltham - that's where I've made the most speed. Bloody scary doing it from the top when there are crosswinds. You get to a certain speed and you just feel that there is no grip on the road, light as a feather, brakes time 🙂
TBC - you and I need to do that hill together so you can see its possible - done it many times.
55mph on a tandem. Would haave gone faster if not for a silly car in the way.
I got 56mph whist doing a cadence of 137 down the road from Pricetown to Mortemhampstead last Sat 🙂

49.7mph Coming down Cefn Bryn on Gower. Tailwind on my MTB.
I don't believe you at all, I'm afraid. If you had a tailwind, you were likely to be going down the north side, and it's simply not long enough and certainly not steep enough to hit 50mph on a MTB* - maybe just possible on a road bike. If you were on the south side, it's steeper but much shorter, so even less chance there. Btw, I'm assuming you are talking about the road off the Bryn - if you were off road then you really need to get a new computer.
The only roads locally where I'd regularly get that sort of speed are north of Swansea, with much longer descents.
* we are talking about 500m in distance before a sharpish left and then another 500m before the road begins to level out, with a total drop to that point of 60m.
I overtook this guy off road coming off Drum Mountain.
I am not ashamed to say that a sh1t myself when I touched the brakes.

About 55mph in the Alps on the DH bike a few years back - verified by GPS
43.8mph on a 20" wheel folding bike during London to Brighton last year; again verified by GPS.
Surprisingly stable, although I think the 5 pints helped...
Fastest on a road bike was about 44 in a 30 the I went round the corner and nearly into the back of a stationary car.
On a MTB it was about 10 years ago in Cannock Chase I overtook my mate and his speedo was reading about 35. I was really pushing it tho which was silly because it was really rutted.
52mph coming down the Mam Tor old road into Castleton. I thought my speedo was broken but I'd overtaken a car and he stopped by me in the village to tell me I'd gone past him and he was doing 44mph.
I was bobbing myself. Terrifying.
55mph down Cromford Hill in Derbyshire.
Nice... whenever i ride down there i get stuck behind a sodding lorry. Some of the corners must be interesting at that sort of speed. It's a 30 limit too 😀 .
My bike speedo claimed I hit 62mph going down Black Rock (nr. Abergavenny) on my old low pro TT bike. It's not something I'd care to do again.
about 55 on my road bike in the Pyranees with crap brakes was really hairy. My other half was doing about 60 on her Dr Dew. I was too scared to try and keep up with her.
52 on a touring bike on Arran (52 year old bike at the time) 54 on Lanzarote with a strong tailwind. I don't trust GPS speedos as a bike is really too slow for them. The above recorded with a hard wired Cateye. And for those who have said how scary it must be on a road bike, I love the buzz of doing 50 down hill. It really focusses the mind, falling off is not an option.
This thread is useless without the Zoofighter. I believe he legitimately pwned us all last time this came up.
57.2 mph descending the Cormet de Roselend towards Bourg St Maurice, proper aero tucked with the wind at my back.
52 on a touring bike on Arran
Ahhhh, the string road i Bet. I dunno my speed on it, but bloomin, brown trouser fast! Done a few times with 60lt rucsack and ice axes on for added 'penalty for failure'.
Dunno any speed other than 'whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooop!' and 'whooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh!'
51mph on roadbike with a big tailwind down a hill. Thought my bike was gonna rattle apart! I've tried several times down the same hill since and can never get past 42-43mph.
83.2 kph going down steep side of Marie Blanque, would have kept going but a corner came up and I couldn`t see properly due to wind in my eyes. 70-75 kph for sustained section down Pailheres through ski station. 🙂
About 45, mtb on road. I don't dare go that fast on my road bike, feels too sketchy with skinny tyres and shit brakes.
50 on the road bike in the Cotswolds, 45 on the kiddyback tandem with child on board and mother behind in the car.
Speed pick-up and stability of a tandem on hills needs to be experienced to be believed. TJ is not exaggerating. Uphill is another matter 😳
49.9 mph on the mountain bike coming down bacup road and 128 mph on the Yamaha on the A57 out of Sheffield
If you like going fast folks they do a speed test at the Mega Avalanche, 80 - 90 kph on snow/ice up the top of Pic Blanc...
I overtook this guy off road coming off Drum Mountain
it is true he is fatter than me so went a little faster. It was bowling green smooth grass with no reference point to note your speed until we broke and then you realised the speed you were doing. Not scarry till we tried to stop
77mph during a race on closed roads - off the top of the col du galibier, heading towards a nice finish up alpe d'huez.
It's amazing what a punture on a climb can make you do on a descent!
If you look at this thread you will notice a gradual increase in the speeds being posted. I fully expect someone to have done 120mph by page 3.
61mph on road bike from blaneau festineog. 5 of us drafting down it was effing scary.
Got a GPS track somewhere proving I went over Mach 1 uphill on the HT. Must have purged it from Everytrail. Must be somewhere around.
Failing that, ca.52mph on road bike on hill down towards Guildford.
And 54kph on a really hot sticky freshly laid tarmac near Mezica in Slovenia (and everyone got face full of stones from the guy in front).
77mph???
faster than sean yates' "record" :-/
452mph on the Euston Road. Them Dahon's are wicked fast, and I was fully tucked in so, yeah, I'm sure it's accurate. My mate said he saw the speedo on an S-Class he was overtaking and that said 449mph, and then I overtook him, so I reckon my speedo is bob on.
Really stable at that speed, but the need for a 265-tooth chainring means there's not a lot of ground clearance.

104 kph = 64mph on my road bike coming down B5106 Gyffin Hill into Conwy 😯 according to sportstracker following a motorbike scarred the life out of me as I was approaching a sharp right hander and had to take evasive action up St Agnes rd.
😆 ok on left handers though.
I'm waiting to page 3 to post mine. 🙂 It will give me a chance to think up some fantastic anecdote to go with it.
Doing about 45mph downhill into Humshaugh village in Northumberland on a Ridgeback hardtail on the road, I tried to increase speed to beat the record but it resulted in me pulling a wheelie which put me off as it would be dangerous.
Some SERIOUS bullshit on this thread

Genuine ROFL
72kph on the mtb whilst on tarmac in the Brecons.
Gave my fellow girlies a hell of a fright. 😯
LOL at some of the speeds stated.
Roughly 40 down from Chunal to Glossop, poo scary when wet.
i tried for years to "break" the 50 mph barrier, best i managed was an indicated 49.9mph, on the drops, with a tailwind.
until the time i rode the A689 from alston to bishop auckland,
62mph according to the cateye, on an mtb with no rear brake, sitting bolt upright. (strong tailwind though)
the thing is, i thought i was 'only' doing about 45 or so, so i could probably have gone faster if id been a bit more aero, or went back on a road bike.
its the drop down towards the nenthead lead mining centre, listed as 14% gradient.
oh, and it was probably the biggest buzz of my cycling life.
i was descending the hill from westbury white horse (on the road) on my cannondale f800.as i got to the t junction at the bottom and turned right,i heard a car horn beeping me.as i looked round a car driver who had been following me downhill stuck his head out of the window and said that he had clocked me doing 52 mph down the hill. (i cannot confirm that myself as i didn't have a cycle computer) i just gave him the thumbs up sign and continued home. 😀
i've only just got a cycle computer, but i managed 36mph the other day in edinburgh without pedalling 🙂

😳 Thinking about it I rather doubt that now, although sportstracker gives you the average speed and fastest it does seem OTT.
54mph on the road down into Hawes from Greenside. Really steep section at the top made me think I was going to come off & die!
Sometimes I barely need touching, but luckily I have an understanding partner.
Ok it was at the end of my usual training ride ( 6 cols before breakfast) with Paolo Salvodelli. We were just coming off a very misty croix de fer when he bet me I couldn't beat him downhill. I hit 120mph overtaking him just before the last hairpin, I was so scared I had to put both hands on the bars.
To be fair there was a tailwind and my hardtail did have slicks.
no way on earth you could do 64mph down Gyffin!

That's utter bull**** - Paulo reckons he was only cruising, so when you went for the corner he just dropped a cog and took you mid-bend as VTEC kicked in, doing 147. He would have gone faster but he was on full opposite lock at the time, just powersliding his way through.
46mph coming down the road from Dumyat, near Stirling. Felt ok, until I started considering braking and then woke up in a ditch. The road outside my parents' house used to be notorious for the police stopping kids coming down from the school at the top. I can't say I ever managed more than 32mph on that one.
Barbury Castle, south of Swindon. Regularly used to ride up there in the morning before work, on my 1979 Holdsworth Special. Sit on the old hill fort and smoke a fag and then come back down the road at 60 - 65mph.
Road bike + spokey dokeys x 42mph = shit pants
58mph coming off dart moor on my way from le to log. Hardtail mtb with road tires. Only got up to about 45 since.
43.7mph chunal to glossop on mtb.
andy i know that descent from barbury castle,it is quite a good one to get some speed on (haven't got anywhere near 65 mph though, only have a mountain bike).
56 to 58 seems to be the absolute terminal speed on a road bike according to my Garmin gps. Cold Fell descent to Ennerdale Bridge is a favourite with a couple of jumps on the way down. +1 for Kirkstone Pass (North Side) + I recall dodging a crashed bike on the Fred Whitton in 2008! The poor sod who came off went over the drystone wall, very lucky escape for him. North side of Newlands Pass not quite as fast, but the acceleration is awesome and you are into some heavily committed turns at the bottom.
Do them before you get too old!
Warp speed, so there suckers 8) 8) 8)
racefaceec90 you need to start from past the cafe and really crank it up a bit on a roadbike. The acceleration down the first steep bit is terrifying the first time you do it. Hope to god no cars coming up. If I did it now I'd need someone with a phone to hold the traffic up.
And to think one night after a few "smokes" we unclipped the canti's on our mountain bikes before doing it. 😯
