Hi,

I have a 2nd hand suspension frame on its way to me with no shock.

What's the best rear shock you have ever owned or used for a significant amount of time?

( best= no trouble, made the bike/ rides better/ brilliant 🙂 )

I might be looking for a 190x50mm for general trails and trail centers depending on if someone else sells their frame without a shock.

Pushed Fox Float - Buy new-old-stock of pretty much any vintage and get it pushed /tuned to your frame.

DHX2 is an amazing piece of kit but I'm amazed at how well my old Pushed CTD rides on the same bike.

Had canecreek double barrels, various rockshox, fox and even marzocchi over the years, the best by far is the fox x2. Been on one for over a year now, outperforms all the others, plus the set up guide from fox is almost bang on. Failing that get a fox dhx rc4 coil, bit heavier bit just works...

Would you consider yourself to be a fit and forget type of rider or would you be willing to out some time into setting it up?

A pushed fox van coil rear shock with a ti spring. So supple and grippy compared to other air shocks I've tried. Down side is lack of pop compared to an air shock. This was on a trail bike.

I'd also say X2.
Though that's not much help as they don't make the right length to fit the G13.
Mojo are doing a custom coil X2 that'll fit.

CCDB coil for pure downhill performance, but possibly a bit heavy.

CCDB inline for trail riding, but no way would I recommend one.

Ohlins STX 22 is pretty good for trail/enduro but it just gives a bit up to twin-tube dampers in very rough terrain.

So where are you planning to ride this beast?

On that I would go for a DPX2 of the budget would stretch or pick up a DBair IL.

Fox Float X, the CTD actually works well and it's super plush.

Thinking of getting the equivalent RS though, servicing is one of those things I always put off unless I can do it myself.

My X2 was sublime. Going from that to a Monarch Plus on the new bike was a painful kick in the nuts.

Fox something with a ti spring on a Nomad 1.5. No faffing or lock out settings, minimum servicing (ie none) . Fit and forget.

CCDB Inline - made such a difference to the bike. It has got a lot of adjustment potential, maybe too much if you're a fit and forget person.

Personally, mine has been fine, but there have been some QC issues 😆 allegedly all sorted now though.

Avalanche tuned fox DHX air.

I was going to say an Avalanche tuned fox until other posts reminded me about the Push tuned Vanilla RC I had fitted to my Morewood Shova.

Thanks!

Pity the x2 won't fit, but the longterm test one at mbr seems to have a x2 of some sort fitted to a g13.

I will be mostly riding this round the peaks, with occasional visits to warncliffe, Wales, Edinburgh area and hopefully an uplift holiday next year. 🙂 overkill- probably, but I've always wanted one and now seems a good time to try!

I had a fox dhx4 which was brilliant on the a downhill bike but I never tried riding that uphill. I was happy setting suspension up mostly.

The cane Creek in line's reliability problems put me right off "sorted" or not. Also at 94kg I'm a bit heavy for one (according to tf tuned).

On a second Read of mbr, that is the mojo 29'er instead on the G13 and they seem a bit different.

For me it's my current shock which is a metric Rockshox rt3 Deluxe with bearing mounts.

Not sure if the geometron could fit one of those though.

I have a mate who is 15 stone riding a IL on a carbine, he is a hard rider (broke countless carbon and alloy frames) and bloody fast to boot. He has had the IL over 3 months now and its been nothing short of faultless.

Have a look at the DPX2, they are meant to be good, getting hold of one is a slight problem though.

People swear by the X2, in my experience it has the same issues all other shocks have. That might well be down to it been very similar to a DB.....

Cane Creek DBair. Mine has the climb switch but I don't need it on my bike and you wouldn't either on a Geometron.

If you're planning on any bigger descents or uplift days then I can't see the point of saving a bit of weight by going without a piggyback - that extra oil volume and cooling ability is so valuable.

5th Element bought second hand to put on my Gemini. Still the best feel generated by a shock/frame combo although it took a while to set it up.

Loving the Push Eleven Six I have on my Tranny, sadly its making the Fox 36 seem a little, urgh.
Its pricy but it seems solid as and I do break things, plus once it set up you can just kind of forget about it, enough to forget about the extra weight over the Super Delux that was on before (which isn't too shoddy either to be fair)
2nd to that would be the CC DBAir I put on the Mach6 to replace the standard Fox CTD it came with, I'm not a suspension guru but the change was incredible.

Got a CCDB AirCS in that size on my 5 and it blows my custom tuned RP23 out of the water by a mile. The climb switch is actually useful too, feels no different but generates a bit more grip on smooth stuff like lumpy fireroads etc. No use on really rough climbs but it's no slouch when fully open anyway.

I replaced the RP23 as the internal shaft is worn out, not because it was no good. Was going to replace the 5 this year but the shock upgrade has put replacement back a year or two it's made that much of a difference!

Mines been perfect. I think "issues" were to do with Specialized frames? Flexing?

Anyway, more than happy to recommend a cane creek in line. For downhill though, cane creek double barrel is the bees,

The Fox dhx2 on my Dh bike is pretty hard to beat too for the price,

Another shout for an RC4, once you get the settings and correct spring weight its amazing

On the spring, all calculators pointed at 500lb (i'm 13 stone) and found the sweet spot to be 400lb

Another very happy Avalanche customer here. Been running an Avy Fox DHX5.0 for nearly 4 years and like Kimbers above I can’t wait to get it back on the bike when it’s off for a service.

For the riding described I'd probably go for a CCDB Air CS, if I could get a decent deal on one.

Rode one on an enduro bike a lot this year and it was very, very capable, totally composed over rough ground.

I know they have a rep for feeling a bit "dead" and I'd agree with that, though I didn't faff with the dials much. You could just say it felt "planted" instead.

Of all the 'rated' shocks I found the CCDB Air to be one of the worst I have used. Awkward to get set up, and had a weird 'soft' spot about 20% into the travel - it felt a like a seal giving up/folding over.

TF suggested they all do that.

I'm tempted to put a coil (maybe Ohlins) on my Fuel - think it would be epic 🙂

Just to add, my avalanched dhx was even better when I stuck an evol can on it, but it took a lot of fettling and a shockwizz to get it right. (Was ready to go back to the normal can as I want happy until shockwizzed)

It's not just descending that's improved massively over the arch monarch, on a process 153, not known for its pedalling ability it climbs much better without the need for a lockout switch, I think the evol can helped with this too, as it sits better in its travel when climbing

Looking at a dpx2 for my new bike upgrade , think I should be able to tune in the same feel myself, but damn they are pricey!

Coil vanilla rc with custom PUSH tune for tf tuned. That's was a decade ago and nothing I've ridden since comes close!

In my old bike BOS Kirk was better than DB air, Inline and bag of Fox RP23 and Floats. It was on long term loan so I don't know how long it would last. However, mate who owns the thing seems to ride now only DVO shocks...

I have Fox X2 on the new bike, so far it feels very good.

My Ohlins STX22 has been really good, picked it up a few months ago and after dialling in pressure, rebound and LSC its never done me wrong.

I was looking at a CCDB Air with a climb switch, but the local shop advised me off it, said they have issues with spiking which would result in a crash. They had witnessed this first hand.

Float X2 is very tuneable, however, does take a while to get the shock to where you want it. Perfect shock for a big travel gnarpoon, not great trail shock as its focus is on downhill/grip/etc.

Have an STX22 on my smuggler and enduro, much easier to setup than the X2, not nearly the same adjustment range. But the shocks are built for you/bike, so the adjustment range is narrower/finer.

My Pushed Van RC from TFT back in the day was bloody brilliant - I don't think that any of the clever shocks I've had since then have been nearly as good until...

My Ohlins TTX on my Demo is very very good. The reduced range of adjustments makes loads of sense and it just works.
