My 2015 Specialized Camber seems "old" as it's just so out of date.

No Dropper post, 2x10 Drive train, no electric motor.

So in mountain bike terms just 4 to 5 years.

I’d say when it’s impossible to buy key parts to keep it going.
Which bizarrely means that some very old bikes would be newer than 5 year old bikes. I suspect that my eTap bikes will become old in about 18 month’s time.

I think it is interesting as mentioned above that hardtails and full sus date differently. I would agree with this having thought about it abit. Probably 6 years for a hardtail.

Just because a bike is old shouldn't stop you riding it though. Shame you cannot get full sus parts for very long. I think my single pivot bikes ( 2005 ish ) can keep being run as they are very simple and only require standard size bearings no links.

There's an element of how hard a life has it had though when it comes to spare parts.

Some people have three of four FS bikes, plus hardtails and road bikes. So even if they ride a lot the 'big' bike might only be getting used one weekend a month for a trip to Wales. At which point its going to get old in the outdated sense. Whereas someone who rides one hardtail everywhere is going to have an old bike requiring restoration/refurbishment by the end of the first winter.

I had a CAAD4 in 1999, I think. Gorgeous bike. Mustardy yellow, I put Rolf wheels on it and rode it into the ground.

My road bike is a yellow CAAD4. Bought is as nearly new in 2005 (think its a 2004 bike). Its on it's 3rd set of wheels, 2nd groupset (arguably just an upgrade) and lost track of drive chains.

I think Cannondales age really well because they generally had quite simple paint and logos. That and the long history of the CAAD bikes means untill the CAAD13 they all shared the same silouette pretty much.

Two weeks ago, I cycled from the Med to the Channel on a 1996 Thorn Audax. Reynolds 531, quill 1 inch stem, deep drop calipers. It didn't miss a beat and was beautifully comfortable.

The only difference between my now-sold 2014 Spitfire and the current version is about a half a degree on the angles and about 5mm anywhere else. But it was pretty progressive, that’s why I chose it!
