Now then

Friend wants to get back into XC racing and needs a new race bike . Budget is limited to around £2k and he wants new. His plan is to both race and train on it, maybe with an extra set of wheels to run road tyres when necessary. I keep thinking that FS is the way to go for racing, but obviously theres the cost to consider which might limit choices.

Any ideas?

Radon Jealous.
For an FS probably a Cube AMS or BMC Fourstroke

KTM Scarp for FS or KTM Aera for HT, I've had both, raced both and they're ace

Radon would be a good bet. Also - if you are considering a full suss, would he consider something like a carbon Sonder Transmitter with a light build kit? Go 29 or 27.5+ for the more techy summer races.

Not strictly a lycra clad racesnake machine, but an interesting option nonetheless.

I know you say you want new, but my mate has a fantastic race bike for sale that I'm advertising for him? If you look in my profile you'll see I advertised it for him at the weekend, a hell of a lot of bike for £2k

Whyte usually have a 29-C hardtail around the £2200 mark so call it £2k with a LBS 10% off rrp.

I previously had a 2015 29-C XTR, carbon wheels etc and it was a blast, would thoroughly recommend. Haven't seen what the 2018 versions are like yet, probably about time they replaced the 135mm rear end but the frame doesn't need anything doing to it really.

Excellent bikes.

Same frame as my 2016 version, higher componentry. Fast and very comfy also - I'm not a HT fan really but i use mine for short XCO only, but have done lots of 2-3hr single track rides and its lovely.

I'd get a hardtail personally. Whatever Scott Scale model is discounted to the desired price
