I use a 20” tube for a 26” ghetto set up at the moment. It’s tight but not too tight. So based on my experience with that, I would say an 18” tube would be best for a 24” wheel.
I tried with a 20 on a 24 and the only issue I had was the rim well being too deep so gave up and put a tube in.
I don't think it needs to be unreasonably stretched just enough it won't ruck up.
Slight resurrection, but I'm thinking of trying to tubeless my daughters Commencal and not sure whether it's a good idea only ever had proper tubeless tyres and rims before.
As far as I can tell neither tyre or rim are designed for tubeless, but at <20psi pressures is this going to be a problem? Have donor 20" tubes at the ready!
I tried to set a ramones 16 up tubeless but it wouldn't hold at all. Never had a puncture either though.
The tyres do seem 'chunky' compared to her previous bike, but we always seem to end up with thorns in the tyres as riding on country lanes a lot. May just stick in some slime tubes.
20" on a 24 rim should be fine - I've just ghettoed some 29 rims with 26 tubes and everything looking good so far.
Ghetto + coke bottle inflator + plenty of soapy water has worked for pretty much all tyre/rim combinations that I've tried.
