Just 'ghettoed' a non-tubeless Big Earl 2.5 to a 819 rim, just wondering what pressure people are normally running stuff at?
To me, 30 PSI feels a lot harder than 30 PSI did with a tubed setup - is this some basic feature of physics that I haven't picked up on? Presumably you would only be getting better grip by the tyre actually being softer and thus deforming more.
Im 14st and run high rollers at 35psi, any softer and they flop about a bit much for me.
i run my 2.4 mountain kings at about 20. still seem a bit hard but i had them at 18 in spain and i could get it drifting on tarmac! good in the rocks mind...
somewhere between 25-35 depending on where i'm riding.
drifting on tarmac???? Is it not possible what you were feeling is the tyres rolling off the rims???MrK - Memberi run my 2.4 mountain kings at about 20. still seem a bit hard but i had them at 18 in spain and i could get it drifting on tarmac! good in the rocks mind...
TJ - fairly slow, sudden turns, got a 'ripping' noise; faster turns and again, felt like a slight drift. they were super-squidgy at this point.
35 most of time, as low as 20 dropping off helvellyn
30-35 - Mud-X
35-40 anything else
Usually depends how wet or dry it is and whether I can be bothered to check the pressure!

Ditto.
25 to 32ish here. 14st.
I find I can go lower with thicker side-walls without them feeling squirmy, as Gamo describes with high rollers - the non ust ones have pretty thin sidewalls.
MrK - sounds like the tyres rolling on the rims to me. I seriously doubt you were drifting on tarmac
Do you lot not ding your rims running at such low pressures?
Had my first ride on UST Mountain King 2.4 rear yesterday eve and it was noticeably more squirmy and skittery than the tubed version at similar pressure (25-30psi probably).
Smacked the rim pretty badly on a flight of steps.
Or do tubeless feel harder for the same pressure as tubed, like Grumm says? My pressure gauge is a bit crap.
35 on BontyTLRs, 30 on DHesque spesh or UST high rollers.
TJ - maybe you're right. if i ever see you up in the pentlands i'll drop the pressure and show you what i mean! ๐
cha****ng - 20psi (off my track pump) feels more like 25 or more with a tube in. not sure why there's this discrepency but most people witness it...
OK, that makes sense, and explains why it was behaving like an underinflated tubed MK.
Definitely seems to drift in hard cornering, on and off road.
I find it depends on the wheel rim size which affects the air volume. i use to run Mud x's at 30 PSI on a set of Bonty Rythm comps with no problems. However when i swapped the same tyre to a new set of Mavic cross trails i set them up to 35 psi and, admittedly, they did feel a lot softer with much more surface contact and i had a pinch flat first time out. I set them up to 45 psi for the next ride and i haven't had any problems since. (i weigh 11' 4) So, in conclusion, different rim sizes require different air presssure for each individual rider.
OK thanks, guess I will start off at about 30-35 and go from there, maybe drop it a bit.
35 feels pretty rock hard to me with the tubeless setup though.
Popocatapetl - i read somewhere that you shouldn't run pressures above 40psi when tubeless
Looks like missed that I was asking about tubeless. ๐

Around 20psi on Stans Flows, 2.25 Ralphs. No dings or burps. I can't fathom why people run them much over 25psi, let alone 30+psi.
front 2ply minion 3C on 823 prob is about 35psi but that was for Fort William and Dunkeld DH tracks and I'm heavy and don't trust it yet.
I have a sealant mark on the rim so even at 35psi, it has burped.
Ran my 2.35 highrollers on 819's at 15 psi for quite a while, I'm only 10.5 stone though ๐ Have upped it a bit to 25-ish since though.
Out of interest PJ266, were you running proper UST High Rollers or ghetto non-UST ones?
different pumps give massively different readings.
when my car footpump read 30 psi my track pump reads 15psi.
30psi in the track pump is brutal on the trails. 20psi max on the track pump.
Proper UST ones. Did hit the rim a fair bit, but they gripped rather nicely and smoothed out the ride no end.
