Let's just imagine for a minute I wanted to paint my own design onto a frame. You know, with a fine brush and all. What paint should I use and how could I best protect it afterwards? Some kind of bake-on lacquer?

Seeing as I don't eat meat, I qualify as a bacon lacker. Probably wouldn't help your frame though...
Spray on lacquer would probably be fine, then slap some heli on it.

A fine paintjob (not by me I must add!) would not be best complimented by covering with see-through tape I feel.

If you are talking about doing a detailed design using a brush I would use the same paint as a pin-striper does for cars. "One shot" I think it's called.
