as above using a standard 32t front ring?

depends on your cassette not the chainring, 11-34/32 go for med cage (sometimes referred to as MTB short cage), 11-28 or lower go for a proper road SS (super short cage) mech (I've seen SS work on 30t cassettes, but it depends on the frame)

I've got a short cage on mine. Had medium cage before, until it ate a root.
Both work well on my 11-34 cassette.

Im using medium cage on 11-32 but could get away with a short cage.
