In true one out, one in rules i’m on the hunt for hardtail. Any recommendations for something that can take a beating but can also be ridden on multi-day trips bikepacking? Ideally something that can climb and descend.

Budget about £1300 either second hand or new.

such a vague question... basically... All of them, none of them, any of them.

What are you classing as a beating ? Does it need rack mounts then ? 27.5 ? 29er ?

I want something I can chuck down rocky technical trails but will also be comfortable for 60 mile day. Doesn't need rack mounts, but does need to be comfy with luggage strapped.

27.5 or 29er. Geometry for a 130mm-140mm fork would be good.

All of them, none of them, any of them

You say that but so far most i've looked at are either racing snakes or hardcore hardtails which weigh a ton

Cotic Solaris, although I have no idea what they cost.
One of the Orange hardtails will probably fit the bill. I never remember which is which!

Orange P7 - mine's been super versatile, tough as old boots, and damn good fun. Three years old - 650b version with 140mm Pikes. For me it's a genuine do-it-all bike - sketchy tech stuff through to all-day trail riding. I ride mostly in the Pennines (Calderdale) and all year round.

as Weeksy says... suggest checking out a 905 - I think there's some on discount just now too

Any idea where the discounts are? Most i've seen are around £1600.

Thanks for the replies so far. I've sent Bird an email to get some advice on Zero AM vs TR

I have an Orange Clockwork 129 which might fit the bill but would be tempted by a steel or Ti equivalent for all day and bikepacking. If you can find a 2018 or wait for 2019 sales, a P7 29 would be perfect. Would definitely get a 29er.

Budget Ti - https://www.alpkit.com/sonder/sonder-signal-ti

I just sold my BFe. It was great going down, but struggled to climb.

chameleon?

I had a mk 1 solaris and a nukeproof scout 29 that I replaced with a chameleon. Initially thought it was a mistake as the scout was so good and I missed it, but now I've really started to like the chameleon - it's not as stable as the scout, so probably ultimately not as fast DH, but it is fun everywhere, pretty light, and versatile with adjustable wheelbase and wheel sizes.

I've got an orange clockwork that will be up for sale soon.

Taken it down snowdon- super fun
100 miles bike packing on Southtown way and a few other smaller trips no problems. Rack mounts, 130mm fork...

Mines an xl with 480mm reach and I've gone for a frame with a longer reach 🙂

Really? Would be good to know what terms you're searching with. Try Google shopping for "trail hardtail".

I love my Vitus Sentier Vrs. Fitted some magic Mary's, a dropper and some bargain manitou mattoc Pro forks and I think it's more fun to ride than my Capra, especially in the winter!
