Its a toss up between a super tacky high roller 2.35 or a super tacky minion front 2.35,,
I have never used any of them so just going on how much people rave about them both
Going for a high roller 2.35 maxxpro on the rear (also never used before)
Got 2.4 conti mountain king protection on at the moment and like them a lot but still keep getting rear pinch flats
I ride in the peaks most of the time on a Orange Five
sorry its another what tyre thread but I know you all like it deep down
Andy
Rubber Queen!
just because i miss reading it day in day out,
conti vert pros
Do you really need ST in the peaks? Personally I would stick the 2.35 HR upfront and buy a 2.1 HR or Advantage for the back.
I used a 2.5" ST Minion on the front (2.35 HR rear) in the alps and it was unbelievably good but in the UK where ski lifts are few and far between I dont think its worth it.
Out of your two choices I think the HR will be better in the mud but more draggy.
I don't think high rollers make good front tyres, they slide about sideways under hard braking. Minion works better imho.
kenda blue groove 2.35 on the front , all terrain have them on offer only £14.98 each .
Hr too draggy for the rear ime. stick it up front there ace. get something quicker out back.
Andy,
I ride mainly welsh trail centres and occasionally in the peaks and for the last year my set up has been a 2.35 High Roller folding kevlar (60a Compound) on the front with a 2.25 Advantage folding 60a on the rear.
This has been on my 5" full sus. I'm 15 stone and have found this to be a really good set up for my riding style.
The HR on the front is completely dependable and really durable. I got fed up with the 2.25 Cinder I had up front previously always washing out in fast sweeping turns no matter the pressure (which I played with a lot).
As for the Advantage out back, its a big tyre and pretty much the same physical size as the 2.35 HR. I run DT 5.1 rims by the way. I've found this to be a great rear tyre in that it really rolls well and doesn't feel at all draggy to me. I recently demoed an Orange 5 which had the 2.35 HR on the rear and it did feel a lot more draggy.
I'm sure the 60a compound will suit you better and last longer unless you really need the extra rubber cohesion. My front HR, which has taken a lot of abuse over the last 12 months still looks virtually new.
Another vote for the Blue Groove here, slowly but surely converting all my reluctant mates but now starting to give away my advantage! 👿
2.25 ust high roller on the front and a 2.25 ust crossmark on the rear, superb!
what do you weigh, and how do you ride?
if you're heavy or at all harsh in rocky stuff, a single ply Maxxis will need to be run pretty hard if used on the rear.. I need 40psi, but I'm over 14st and on a hardtail. wouldn't bother with a supertacky up front either front unless you're a DH racer or really push it in turns. - if you're not pushing it hard enough to flat a single ply front on most rocky descents I'd question whether you're actually pushing 60a's anywhere near their extremes of grip as well.
oh, and Minions are better than HRs at everything right up to the point you should be using a mud tyre.
I am about twelve stone and dont ride too aggressive but just want as much grip as possible on the front end and try as much as i can to stop the rear flats i get from time to time
been running my mountain kings at about 25 psi front and had not flats and loads of grip and the rear at 30 but just upped that to 35 to stop the pinch flats
not mega fit but get up most of the hills in the peaks on the setup at the moment
cheers
Andy
maxxis super tacky swamp thing on front (if grip is important) 😀
You don't neccessarily have to be "pushing" the tyre to reach the extent of its grip do you though? 42a's are obviously much grippier in tight, technical stuff as well, steps, roots, slabs etc....
I had to get rid of the 60a HR on the front because i realised how rubbish they were in wet/damp conditions.
ive kept one on the back but put a stick-e nevegal on the front and its much more confidence inspiring in mixed conditions.
I had a High Roller 2.35 42a wipe out on me yesterday, somehow I managed to fall to the side and land on my feet though! Looked like the problem was the tyre had filled with mud, and mud on mud doesn't give much grip! I think I might give a Minion a go this autumn/winter. HR is excellent in rocky and dry conditions.
stick with the tyres you have got, either tubeless or higher pressure in the rear to prevent the pinches.
other than that.......
I am tempted top stick with the mountain kings as i like them so much...was just all the people on the forums saying contis are crap get some high rollers/minions super tacky on the front
just did a day at Llandegla in the rain and my front end was great and my mate who has a super tacky 2.5 high roller said his was slipping about from time to time , and we ride at the same pace so that also got me thinking
if i never try them i will never know
Am I allowed to say "anal" on here?
🙄
How about Spesh Eskar 2.3 - bit of a Marmite tyre - I LOVE em!
Panaracer Trailblaster tubed, Bontrager Revolt Super X tubeless.
It was simple in early nineties before all this internet forum stuff telling you this that and the other, you just stuck a onza porcupine on the front and a panaracer smoke on the back job done..
Just walked past my old scott sat at the bottom of the hall and its still got them on 🙂
