[Closed] What forks for a Hemlock? DT Swiss maybe?

After several months of ooh-ing and aah-ing over different FS frames, ST's review of the Hemlock helped me finalise my decision. Now I just need to decide what forks to put on one. I've always liked RS forks but have been looking a bit further afield now. Here's my shortlist:

RS Revelation Team/RLT Ti 150mm
RS Lyrik U-turn
DT Swiss XMM 140/EXM 150mm
Marzocchi 55 RC3 150mm
and (I'm not too keen on the servicing requirements)
Fox Float/Vanilla 140mm

They're all roughly the same price, with the DTs being most expensive, but only by about a tenner. If I'm honest they're probably my favourite right now but I'm unsure of the reall difference between the XMM and EXM. The XMM has a twin-shot damper, the EXM doesn't and is a little cheaper.

The Lyrik and Marz. 55 are probably a bit much, but I've found some cheap.

I'll be getting the Hemlock with 120mm rockers, to be used mainly on techy, rocky, rooty singletrack, and the occasional visit to areas like Åre.

Any suggestions, especially experiences of the DT forks? Thanks in advance.

imho, (as an owner)

120mm rear

140mm fork.

but then, i'm not really a fan of long travel, i think we all fell into the trap of thinking more travel = better.

The cotic/hemlock geometry is brilliant, you'll be amazed what it will ride up/over/down if you let it. even with short forks.

(and shorter forks are cheaper/lighter)

would you consider RS Sektors?

I have had Rev 150's and Lyric 160's on mine but it now has a pair of Pike 140's which seem spot on - they have dropped the bottom bracket height a tadge which may be why it feels so good.

Yeah, that's pretty much why the longer ones are there, even though I suspected 140 would be preferable 😳 Good news is I've just found some bargain 2010 XMMs 😀

Sektors are sort of on the list (they'll certainly make the wife happier). For their price I could have them PUSH'd (when that becomes an option) and still come in a [i]lot[/i] cheaper.

I'd be saying Sektors too, nothing to do with the fact I fancy a set for my new bike 😀

What ahwhiles said ^^^^^ on travel

I'd go for magura thors. Mega stiff , easy to service , nice and plush.

(I have rev teams but would go for magura's next time)

The Bro has 120mm rear and 160mm front, the few times I've ridden it (a while ago now) it felt a little high at the BB for my liking (he loves it BTW), 140s should be good and probably would be my choice to lower the BB.

As above mine has Talas 160/130/110 at the front.

I ride it at 160 everywhere unless i am on a long non tech steep climb - 110mm

or shorter, very steep techy climb - 130mm

I find the BB too low at 110 for anything lumpy and still get strikes at 130

But most of the time i leave at 160mm and i can still climb most stuff.

Mines the early model so has 100 or 160 at the back and to be quite honest i rode it at 100 for 18mnths till the bearings went. I have now run the 160 rocker for 12mnths and realised i don't care either way!

I also swapped the original Pearl once it gave up the ghost for a coil Van R and it seems to suit it nicely.

I have on occasion forgotten to put the fork back up for descent and enjoyed it just as much. I think the actual height of my 36 fork at 130 may be very similar to 32's at 140?

Been running DT Swiss for the last 7 months, they are superb!

I'd say go long. Mine's got Revelation Teams (120-150mm u-turn) which are pretty stunning- light, stiff and brilliantly controlled. That was run with a +10mm Hope headset so effectively a 160mm fork from the geometry point of view. The u-turn gives the option to run at 130mm effective but that doesn't suit it that well IMO, needs a lot of care to avoid pedal strikes and doesn't really gain that much. With a long fork (and short rocker) the thing comes alive, I can't recommend it too highly, still climbs very well but then descends like a dropped bomb. Fantastic bike

Currently it's built with a -2mm head angle reducer and a set of air Lyriks... I love the slackness, not quite so convinced by the Lyriks, they're stiff as hell but I prefer the performance of the Revs and they're miles lighter too.

Thanks for the replies guys. That makes my life a bit easier now. Looks like a U-turn Sektor or Revelation might be just the ticket. Now it's just to decide between the coil Sektor and air Rev.

My missus is running 150mm Revs on hers and that seems to work very well even with an old-skool 100mm rear end. Sensible weight, sensibly stiff, decent amount of travel and easy DIY service.Feel pretty good too!

(can't comment on DT swiss per se, but I used to have some Pace forks which use the same chassis, not so sure about the internals these days. Put it this way, there's a good reason all our bikes are on RS these days 😉 )

U-Turn Revs on mine and I've settled on about 140mm as being about right. Got a pair of Wotans to try on it once I get round to it.

I have Thors on Mine. Which are mega stiff and light but take a while to get them setup right and the travel adjuster has seized twice after very muddy rides. But once setup right they are pretty good forks altought I will probably replace them this year.

My next fork for the Hemlock would be a Fox 36 Float RLC reduced to 140/150mm or Rock Shox Revs.

CRC have tapered steerer Revelations dual air RLT 140s (2011) for under 270quid. Ideal.

I'm running 2010 Fox 36 Floats at 140mm.
Lovely at that.

They were at 160mm but always felt a bit long set at that for normal riding.

Had Magura Thors but they went back due to multiple failure of the same internal item. They were nice when they worked but not as good as the Fox.

all quite different forks - do you want something super plush feeling, or a bit more "sit up on the damping" in techy stuff? I've got XMM (the 140) DT and love em - great on steppy/blocky stuff round here. EXM more plush/open...

Best forks I've ever owned are my DT Swiss XMC130's. Nudging their first 200 hour recommended service interval, still working perfectly. Shall I service them or shall I be lazy and wait for a deterioration in performance?!

Previously used Pace, Rock Shox and er, Shocktech. Whatever you do don't try Shocktech.

Revs here, as they are just sorted forks, and that is coming from one of the service companies.
Got u turn ones 110-140 I think.
More because I though I might not like the bike, and switch frames.
Not an issue now though.
I would get those revs on CRC
Think je james had some chaep also ..

I almost exclusively run Rockshox forks these days (apart from my Wotans) and find them generally reliable and uncomplicated.

I'm put right off DT Swiss though, mainly because of the excessive cost compared to their Pace ancestors. I had a pair of Pace RC40s before, which retailed at £439 - half the price of the DT Swiss incarnations. My Paces had lovely damping, but utterly shocking reliability. The travel adjust always adjusted itself down to 100mm, the seals didn't last long and the fork quickly felt "gritty". They were sent back to Pace twice before they started to feel anything like plush again. That said, DIY servicing on them was an absolute doddle.

As you can imagine I've run through quite a few options over the years, and for Riding Around (tm) I think you'd be fine with the DT's. I ran their ancesters, the RC41 Fighter Bolt Thru a few years ago and they were really nice. I've run Thors for a couple of years, and currently have some Fox Float150's on it. Pretty much anything 140-150mm travel will suit the bike. Don't forget to place your order soon. We're getting very low on stock.

Al - those are the ones one my current list 🙂

Cy- I was hoping/am having to wait a couple of months probably. Waiting on a bonus from my last job and first pay check from my new one. If all else fails there's an importer in Sweden who's been sitting on a frame for over a year now with no interest 😮 but obviously I'd prefer to buy direct, if only because of Swedish VAT costs. When might you be getting more (large size)?

Anyway, forks might be sorted. Last night a cheap set of Fox Vans came up s/h near me, so unless I'm outbid they should be mine.

I run DT Swiss 150 EXC's and 130 xmc on mine.
Just thinking of changing it for a Yeti asr 5 but don't know if i should or not.
