I have only used the GoPro a couple of times and have been trying to make my edits a bit slicker. What do you all think of this?
Hate the tune and got bored before the end. i reckon 3 mins is about the max for a vid like that - perhaps even less. Seen a lot worse tho
What edits (apart from the couple of slowmo bits)?
Sorry had to turn the volume down too (must be an age thing) ๐
The mood of the song is not synonymous with the vid.
Needs bigger jumps / a crash and some harder tunes.
Horrific music and dull to watch.
Well, you did ask ๐
music doesn't fit (in the slightest)
slowmo on a puddle really?
boring riding and the angle was on far too long... turned it off now as it was painful - sorry! watch some tutorials
think there being a bit hard on you as you have only used the cam a couple of times. I can see what your trying to do but the constructive points above all need addressing, i.e.
Music is wrong, for something like that I would have looked for an instrumental piece as the words in the song don't fit and you want the music to enhance the Vid not over power.
The rear angle was way to long, better to have more looking down the track with just a couple of shots at the rear (also forward cam shots always look like your going faster than you are) mix it up a bit.
Slow mo work needs work, a good idea would be to go on You Tube and search for tutorials as mentioned above.
Keep at it, know one made a great vid over night, look forward to seeing your next instalment ๐
Genuine thanks for the input. Choosing the music is something I find quite hard tbh plus I am limited to what I have on iTunes. I may try and find something a little more chilled.
As for the slo-mo bits I loved the one through the puddle, problem is we wern't going fast enough coming upto it so the effect doesn't work quite as well. Maybe I should speed up the run in.
I have some more footage from the ride that is forward facing maybe I need to chop and change it around a bit and not be so precious about showing the whole of each section and every section in the correct order.
You don't get better without criticism.
I can't hear the music, is it by Milli Vanilli, or 2 Unlimited?
A bit boring. That is usually the case with all my footage! You need to mix up the camera angles, well at least have a forward facing one for some of the video. Following a fellow rider quite close is usually quite good.
You will never please everyone with the music as its a very personal preference. I personally wouldn't go for the song you used, you need something with a bit more grit.
You need to watch some other videos that you like and try to recreate that feel/effect. [url=
video is made by an STW'er, love the effects used. [url=
video here, is my best editing to date, although there are some who just don't like it!
Editing, usually means cutting a lot of the footage out, I find this extremely hard, as I think its all good! I usually get some mtb friends to watch it, then when they loose interest, you know you can probably cut that footage. Come back to it a week later, and you'll find you'll be saying cut that, cut this. etc.
Just remember, you can't please everyone, and it takes a while to get the hang of video editing. What software are you using?
Nice work Milkie. Where was that?
The first one you provided a link to Milkie is very good. Even though its a boring type of ride ( no massive jumps / berms etc) it still held my attention because of the brilliant editing and angles.
Just how long does it take to put something like that together ?
Not knocking your video , but just an observation on most home made videos. They tend to be really boring , we all love mountain biking otherwise we wouldn't post on here but It seems to be really difficult to make an interesting video.
Maybe switch between angles , try different mounts , take ride by footage (bike going towards then away from camera) and generally mix it up .
Check some of Coastkids video's to see what I mean , with careful editing you can make the most mundane trail look like somewhere In B.C (within reason).
At the end of the day my mates that have GoPros use them to have fun both riding and then editing the results.
I like the music, it's the only thing that didn't stop me switching off after 7 seconds.
As others have said, single view point can get a little boring. I think if you want to shoot anything half decent you have to ruin the flow of the ride, use different angles & session sections again using different angles.
More good points guys. Stanfree I actually agree with you that most films are boring, I knew I would get some proper criticism putting it on here and that's why I did it.
I have put together another one that is only 5 mins long, I'm going to try to make it shorter and find a suitable tune. Then we can go through this again. I also have some filming ideas for the future I just need the weather to be a bit better.
It needs a massive tune, see billysuggers videos for inspiration.
Needs a HT
Having been critical of a lot of go-pro films that are like MTB holiday home-movies, a friend and I made one last autumn - he edited it. I was suprised how much footage it took for a short film, we did use 2 cameras and lots of different angles but still only got a couple of minutes. It's hard to make a good one.
'only 5mins'? I think 2.30-3mins tops is a good rule, bike films should be short and punchy like a good record. If you were to show a trip / ride in 10 pics you either need great pics or an interested audience. Quick edits, camera angles, close-ups and long-ranges etc, all helps keep attention. TBH the 2nd video milkie linked to is a good piece but the effects and crops were ott for me, maybe too much of a good thing.
Right I'm being brutal. Pared it down to about 2:50.
Any idea on banging tunes David?
Its got to be one of the summer sounds of 2006 (or 2007?)
The lyrics in the next one are ideal for the video aswell
I_Ache - the rear shot works well. Needs breaking up though.
Tell you what - I'll open one of mine up for criticism.
Awful...
Where you trying to sync the music with your freehub, I Muted the music after the intro, could of picked a better section of CYB to film than the Pink Heifer!
I quite enjoy Pink Hiefer, I think you need to pedal hard to get the most out of it tho.
Update. Here is the latest, I havent included anything from the first vid but here goes. Do your worst.
Unfortunately, this UMG-music-content is not available in Germany because GEMA has not granted the respective music publishing rights.
Sorry about that.
That's normal if people infringe copyright and dub their favourite band ๐ฟ ๐
edit: CyB one in the previous post worked. Much prefer the noise of bikes, than tunes.
Over here it works but they put ads on it so the artist gets money.
Nowt wrong with Pink Heifer, just meant a more techie section with a few drop offs may off added to it ๐
More interesting than the first vid and if your mate had managed to keep on your tail or close in front it would be a lot better as it gives a perspective on speed and terrain. Looks like a fun trail now and that didn't come through at all in the first vid.
Another interesting music choice ๐
<looks forward to next instalment>
Problem is woody that most of my riding mates are faster going up than me but slower coming down. I need to find tome to ride with the fast descenders more often.
New vid with The White Stripes Seven Nation Army would work well imho... ๐
