Thinking I might swap out the SPD/touring pedals for a set of proper 3 bolt road pedals but that requires a new pair of shoes. What are the go to roadie shoes under £100ish?

I’ve got a pair of the Dorica and they came up big; I had to go to a 43 from my usual 44.5, and they are quite narrow.
Lake shoes fan here. Sport pursuit have some.

Fizik are good R5 are on budget. Can’t go too wrong with Shimano.
If your only pair I’d steer clear of laces and look for boa closures, as better if they get wet.
I’d go for fiziks though personally

Shimano carbon soled models at whatever your budget is, which might be difficult but I've got my last two pairs under £100 in sales.

However, as I’m finding out to my detriment, Fizik are far more pointy than Shimano

According to the bike fit man on Francis cade. The best shoes are the ones that fit you.
He normally recommends lake shoes and dislikes fizik unless you have narrow feet

I like Shimano personally but you do need to size up.

Giro and Fizik also nice.

I bought these last month. For the price they are great.

Bontrager Velocis get a good write up for weight and fit.

I'd also check out the entry level Specialized Torch, looks great for £90.

I'm happy with my Lakes but if I ever get to visit the big mountains again I'll be looking forward to buying a lighter pair, could save 300g relatively easily...

Is there much advantage going from spds to 3 bolt?

Whatever from Shimano or Specialized that you like the look and price of. I prefer the latter as they’re slightly wider but they’re both fine.
Exception being if you have wide feet tv then Lake or Bont come into play.

What shape are your feet? Mine are like sticks so I like lace up Giro. Shimano are a bit wider and good value.

I’ve got Fizik R3 Aria beautiful things and light.

I’ve got wide feet too and find them very comfy

I got them dirt cheap £80 think they are quite a bit more expensive now

I've tried a few and only Shimano shoes have a heel deep enough to grip my foot and prevent it moving up and down.

I've got some Giro Savix shoes in 42 that I'll sell you for £40 delivered. Only problem is... they're red and black. Only worn twice, new condition.

Cheers for the offer but I'm either a 46 or 47. really need to try something on first before I order from Germany or Holland haha

For stiffness, security and long-ride comfort, definitely. They're also much harder to clip / unclip*, and harder to walk in. MTB / Commute / Gravel / Cx then SPD. Road rides where I'm gonna ride for 2hrs without putting a foot down, SPD-SL.

*for me, YMMV.

There’s really no way of getting a decent answer or decent advise for this kind of thing via a post imo. The best approach is to pick a few you like the look of in your budget, order online and send back the ones that won’t fit. It might take a few attempts.

Not 100% sure, but I may have a pair of Lake CX176's left in your size from closing my shop last year. I'll have a look and get back to you if you're interested?

As an aside, I'm still a massive fan of Lake as a brand, I've had several pairs of MTB and road shoes from them over the years and the quality is second to none.

I think you just need to try some on, I have Mavic shoes because they really fit the shape of my foot, I've got relatively narrow feet with a high instep.

What would you recommend to a Lake wearer looking for a pair of lightweight climbing slippers? The 301s?

I have the entry level CX161s right now, comfortable and well made yes but I think they're close to 800g for the pair...

As pointed out, fiziks are pretty narrow. Worth ordering few pars then returning though
