As a newbie to off road riding who is emigrating to warmer climbs, what tyres should I fit to my Marin Mount Vision 5.8 to ride dry trails consisting of hard packed sand, lose gravel and rocks. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Maxxis Ardents. That's my personal preference.

You'll get all sorts of answers asking that question, so dont be surprised if you come out of this thread more confused than before.

Thanks for the advice. The Ardents were already on my short list. Any advice on tyre size?

Another vote for ardents. They come in at a bigger volume than you might think compared to other brands (and even older maxxis) the 2.25's are plenty big enough and the ones I would go for.

One of the Maxxis Larsens was designed for sandy soil IIRC.

But they're also draggy and real heavy.

"Dry sand, gravel, rocks" just about sums up the conditions here in Western Australia, and the preferred tyres are Maxxis Crossmark, with maybe a Maxxis Ignitor on the front for a bit of extra grip. Where are you heading glen815?
