[Closed] What 29 x 3.0 tyres are about these days?

I know it seems to be a diminishing niche nowadays, but I still have a place in my life for 29+.

My Surly Dirt Wizard front has seen better days so a replacement is imminent. Got a Chronicle on the rear which I like (in most situations) but I know they've stopped making them.

So what's about? Might get a couple in for stock.

Bontrager still do plenty - XR2, SE4 and XR4. They all seem to be in stock at various online shops as well, although the XR2s seem to have got rarer lately but they're a bit fast rolling for a front tyre.

Cheers for that.

I take it that the higher number is the gnarlier/chunkier tyre?

EDIT* Hmmm. Those XR2's look suspiciously similar to Chubacubra's which were my first 29+ experience. They looked great on but they were awful on anything other than a bone dry trail.

I've just been looking into this too, I fancy something a bit faster rolling than my front Minion to partner the Chronicle I have on the rear. I spotted the Vittoria Bomboloni at a good price, has anyone tried these?

I spotted the Vittoria Bomboloni at a good price

Just seen these on ebay. £30 with wire bead, £45 (I assume) folding (though the stated weight is the same - 970g??)

Look a good (and cheap) option

For £30 I'm gonna give them a try, if they're rubbish I'll put the Minion back on 🙂

I may try them too - though I'd rather cough up the other £15. I've never got on with wire beaded tyres.

Yeah, good point. I'll try and cancel and go for the folding option.

Quite a timely thread this as i'm just looking at dusting my 29+ Travers off & fitting some sus forks. There does seem to be a lack of treads about at the moment. HAs anyone tried a 3.0 DHF?

I run DHF 29 x 3 front and DHR rear in the winter and Teravail Coronado on the summer (2.8’s). The Minions are enormous, proper bulldozers with silly amounts of grip but very draggy. Suspect I’ll be putting them back on in the next few weeks as Coronado’s will probably not cut it in mid-winter Peak District gloop.

Bonty XR4 are great all rounders as you say XR2 get very hairy in mud.

My bike came with 3.0 DHF / DHR. They were fine in the dry but not great in the wet. I find the Bontrager SE4 much better and it also has better transitional knobs for leaning into corners. I've stocked up on those as I get the feeling 29x3 is going to be a thing of the past soon.

I picked up a Duro Crux 3.25” last week, seems they were very briefly in stock, as I decided to order another and all gone already!
