Shameless reminder for all those interested to pledge some money

If you don't, then the crowd funding might fail, and i won't get my Fatbike in February! 🙁

http://singletrackworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/singular-crowd-sources-a-fat-trail-bike/

They've raised £11.6K from a target of £20K

Not far to go now guys - so get pledging!! 🙂

I'd love one but if you're going to buy a fatty why would you choose this over the on-one fatty?

This is not a dig, I am a Singular fan BTW.

I suppose it's the same as why buy a swift over an inbred but it just seems less important when you're on 4inch tyres...

I've been toying with the idea of a On-One Fatty for a couple of months - but the Singular option really appealed to me

I suppose I'm just keen on helping a small British business get something unusual of the ground

I'd like to think a few reasons, but fundamentally they are quite different bikes. Not least the OO being al whereas yhe Puffin is steel. The geometry is also very different, plus the Puffin will look much nicer. Shiggy's comments on my Facebook page were quite interesting.

The on-one actually is quite gopping compared to the Puffin....in my opinion.
Has to look aesthetically correct

I wasn't wanting to make any negative inferences about the On One - I've ridden one a bit and liked it, but I wanted to create something quite different from it - which I think the Puffin will be. All comments are obviously IMO only.

I'd love to buy a Puffin, I already have a Gryphon. But I also have a Mukluk and don't need/have room/can afford another bike.

I've gone for a puffin over the onone, 2 main reasons are the onone doesn't have the option of being SS the other reason is its an on one.

Should be able to source cranks and BB's as well.

Takisawa, I didn't want to make the chainstays an inch longer. There is a dedicated 29+ bike in the pipeline.

I know I might be in an uneconomical minority, but if the Puffin were available in small (with ETT like a medium Gryphon) I'd buy it in a heartbeat at the full price! I assume it is possible, since the head angle and offset make the front-centre long like the Gryphon.

It's a possibility s-keeper - if we overshoot the target by a good amount then I may well order a few in a smaller size.

I keep looking at Fat bikes in general and keep wondering. I do fancy one but it would only ever be as a 2nd or maybe even 3rd choice. Its very hard ti ignore the On One Fatty bundle for £500. Like many, I have a stack of bike flotsam knocking about and all I'd need on top of that bundle would be a bottom bracket. And I'd defo want it in readiness for winters gloop. Think I've just talked myself into one!

I really like the look of the Specialized Fatboy, but £2500 for the expert model is a lot to splash on a bike without a demo....
The Puffin looks lovely, but sadly not my size

Let's say if we hit £25k I will do a size small as well. Not sure if I can add a 'stretch goal' at this late stage, I will try. Basically the top and seat tubes will both be an inch or so shorter with a couple of other little tweaks.

Dammit.

New Swift to run a 29+ front wheel and a large volume 2.4'' out back or go full fat.

The OO isn't long enough in the TT for my liking but the Puffin will be.

Hmm.

How about a buy one get one half price deal 😉

If you back the Kickstarter and do a pre-order on a Swift that is effectively what you are getting, in fact even a better deal than that!

If we get to £25k and there are at least 5 backers who want a size S then it will happen.

Got the money sitting but decided to stick with another new Pugsley black frame- on the way from the USofA, as the 29+ wheels fitting a fat bike was the deciding factor, already owning a set.

But it`s good the Puffin is coming from the UK 🙂

Folk can say all the marketing, with the geometry stuff but a Pugs works fine on trails with the 4" set up, and the Krampus 29+ wheels,

I want one steel bike that takes both wheel sets for weekends/ summer hols away in the car - 2 bikes in one for the best of both worlds, ideal for fun in the Highlands - or Scottish Borders for that matter,

Maybe the Puffin will be a fast bike on trails

Maybe any 29+ bike is a fast bike on trails,

The geometry of the Pugs with both wheel sets (4" and 29+) works fine on err trails :-), fast enough for me anyways, but seriously,

The Puffin still looks to be the nicest option for an inline steel fat bike, and it is British 😉

Said it already, best of luck with this... 🙂

Oh a Reynolds 853 inline fatbike please (that takes 29+ also) and i`m in

Hey Sam

Now that you've nearly reached your stretch goal of £25K, how about having a dropper compatible seat tube...

Any details on the wheel sets your hoping to offer?

Just starting to pull the necessary equipment together, and with the wheels being the major cost driver, i'm keen to know what the options are

Thanks

Jon

Not quite answering your question but the expected weight of a Medium is 2.7kg. I think that I read somewhere that the prototypes are heavier

You won't regret it. You may as well start culling your other bikes now. 🙂

A couple of pointers for people coming new to fatbikes.

You don't have to spend a fortune on wheels. The On-One option is pretty reasonable, and also you can buy fat rims from chopper bike specialists. That way you don't pay the fat tax.

A couple of rim suppliers:

Classic Cycles in Germany

Robsson in Germany

The critical thing will be getting your hands on a 100mm BB. All of a sudden there's going to be 50 odd people looking for the same thing, and this is a component that can be hard to find. The cheapest way is to get a 100mm ISIS BB so you can use any old ISIS crankset (and good ones are cheap).

Bear in mind fatbike components come into the country in dribbles and once they're out we usually have to wait till next year for more.

So don't miss winter, get your bits now, and don't forget the tyres. 🙂

So, for the sake of argument, lets say I'd been in on this and had just received the 'choose your size' email.

I'm not sure which one to go for.

Looking at the numbers (particularly the top tube/reach) on the kickstarter page and comparing with the ones on a Titus Fireline and Liteville 301 (both of which I have a medium of and like how they ride) it looks like the medium is similar.

But I'm way over the height that Sam's suggesting for the Medium and in the upper half of the large puffin one.

*confused*

what would you do?

...what would you do?

Rather than look at the size, check to see if the toptube length is similar to what you're riding. Then look at standover.

I deliberately went down a size on my Pugsley to get a little bit more knacker room. You can ride quite soft surfaces on a fatbike, but when you come to a stop and put your feet down they sink right in - at which point you appreciate the extra clearance. 🙂 So if you're intending to ride on snow or bog, that's worth considering.

Fatbike riding is a bit different from normal mtb stuff - unless of course you're planning sticking to the same sort of riding you're currently doing.

I'd go by top tube length.
I'm 6'2" and 34" inside leg and have gone for a large. I had a large Gryphon and it was perfect.

Anyone else clock that the Puffin fork is set up for front hub spaced 135mm hubs (ie Jones/Paul WHUB) and not rear spaced (ie pretty much every other fat bike front hub, incl Hope Fatsno)?

Front hub is 135mm OLD spacing using standard rear brake disc alignment

A fatsno will work fine. I'm sure it's the same spacing as the Enabler on my Muk and I use fatsno's with no problems.

But not with the Singular forks - unless you do some spacing.

The production forks will use a front standard disc mount, allowing any 135mm ISO disc hub to be used. Hubs built on a rear hub disc standard (eg. Hope, Surly, or any 135mm rear hub) will need to have the brake caliper/adapter spaced across by 4mm - i.e. a couple of washers. This allows maximum flexibility for use of any type of hub.

Someone with access to a decent machine shop could make up some nice adapters.....

On the sizing thing .... I'm 6' 2" and a tiny bit.

I went with the XL.

Nice long TT so I can run a short stem but still under (just) 20" ST.

I cannot see me actually riding it on snow 😉

Roll on Feb.

Trying to get my head round this too! So I get a normal adaptor and use some washers to push the calliper inboard by 4mm? Is it as simple as that?

Hope make disc rotor spacers in 1 & 2mm spacing which could move the rotor out ... If I remember correctly the offset is 5mm

Also white brothers make an adaptor which is v expensive

All you need is The Carver 5mm Disc spacer, comes with longer rotor bolts... 🙄

Not rocket science 😉

Sure Tim at Sideways have em, i got one for my Jones fork that i opened out from 9mm to 10mm to take Fatso hubs 🙂
