Buy some 2nd hand forks, new headset and put some Deore brakes on it and you have an OK budget bike?
I wouldn't ride down a black mountain rated trail with V brakes, but that's just me, I'm a coward/sensible.

Like a disposable BBQ with the amount of riding I get to do at present perhaps a container load of theses would make more sense than a new alpine.
