Simple - need a good pair of really waterproof walking/winter boots that can be used on the bike with flats, any recommendations?

I use cheapo lightish Karrimors with waterproof socks, water is usually going in the top being my experience. Works well with decent pins in the pedals.

I was always told that you should only wear flat soles with flat pedals, as the pins can get wedged between the grip on walking boots and not give you any actual, er, grip.

Are waterproof socks the key here? How do they feel when the boots are soaking, never used then before? My old boots are really comfy & grippy, just the waterproofing letting them down. Have tried proofing them, but still not good enough for long wet rides.
Pedals have extra long pins for working with boots, so good with that one.

Yup, SealSkin or Porelle Drys for waterproof socks, there may be others. In heavy rain the water will be pouring down your legs, and unless you've got baggy waterproof trews or gaiters on, lots will be heading into your boots anyway. Also there's the occasional putting your foot down to see it disappear shin deep in a bog moment too. And it can get really bad when you leave the trail centre car park. I don't have a problem with grip with hiking boot soles, or regular trainer soles for that matter. Skate soles are deffo stickier, but I'd rather have a sole with some walking grip most of the time.

First impressions really good, got a big ride tomorrow, so good change to test them as it is really wet up here

I always buy north face gortex gutties, never had a problem with grip on my v8's.. then again as a kid i used to jump about on the spindles of broken plastic peddles, i don't really reckon i'd have much problem getting grip from peddles in a pair of high heels if i was that way inclined!

I've been using some Merrell approach shoe things for a couple of years now. Vibram sole.

Useless, they are.

Was out with these tonight, perfect, really comfortable & actually grip pedals better than my impacts.
Given that I ride a fatbike on the beach/bog & not shy to river crossings I think these will do just fine during the winter when paired to sealskinz socks.... 😉
I found some keen boots just after I bought mine & I thought they were very good. They are no the "to get" list now... 😆
