It's not my neck of the woods by a very long way but worth a warning all the same.

Some very nasty spike traps have been found in the Glencruitten woods area. Could be terrible for a horse or if stood on by a walker or cyclist.

Caltrops. I doubt you can buy those on eBay; somebody's actually had to make them. Blimey.

I know the people that do this have room temp IQ but this is a danger to absolutely everyone one and thing that uses these paths. Straight through the sole of any shoe that stands on it not to mention dog paws, horse hoofs etc. if anything cyclists would come away the least damaged. Absolute cretins.

Anyone found to be setting those deathtraps up needs to be locked up and have the key thrown away, lethal to anything that goes over them!

No doubt some bright spark has issues with particular visitors to those woods, but haven't twigged how innocent bystanders will fare on them.

Just re-read the article and it sounds like there was also a second incident where metal wire had been stretched across the trail (I originally took the 'wire' to be the chicken wire the caltrops were set in). Assuming that this was at neck height then you have genuine lethality!

Straight through the sole of any shoe that stands on it not to mention dog paws, horse hoofs etc.

Historically horses were generally the intended target.

My first reaction was "ohhh caltrop" and then "why place it so carefully?"

Either the manufacturer or the placer didnt understand that you should be able to just lob a handful and the design ensures a point is facing upwards.
