Anyone not use nikwax / graingers / etc and just throw in with the darks ?
New Goretex jacket doesn't suggest any special detergent, just tumble dry and light iron......
Always tried to wash with nikwax , but now not too sure.....?
I''ve alway washed with techwash type stuff.
Doesn't seem worth taking the risk of damaging kit for the sake of £6 a year. I tend to just wash a load of tech clothing together.
I thought for Goretex, you wash on a gentle cycle with a little washing powder, then warm (not hot) tumbledry which helps re-waterproof it. Mine has been washed many times like this and is still waterproof.
i thought loads of regular washing powders etc had softeners in them, which was bad news, even though they probably clean the stuff ok?
I just use the basic own brand non-bio. The posh blister pack things and tablets might have nasty softener in them.
I don't really get softener...it shouldn't be used on technical fabrics, and if you use it on fluffy stuff like bath towels and dressing gowns, it turns them into cardboard. If it gets added by mistake you can tell as soon as you take the towels off the line.
If it is anything like washing down tents etc then it is pure soap flakes and NOT detergent of any type. The surfactants in the detergents will let the water through and will also stop any reproofing as I recall.

+1 for soap flakes
+2 soap flakes
With GoreTex and/or Event I've always just used NikWax. As peterfile said, it's not worth the risk of damaging it for less than £10 a year.
We don't have a tumble drier so I struggle to get the DWR treatment back onto by waterproof / shower proof clothing.
