The only washers I have are where they are captive washers on the pedals. I only have alloy cranks tho

Never done it, never had an issue, never owned carbon cranks.

Depends more on the pedal - if it has a circular flange after the thread, then washer not really needed. If there is no flange and has a sharp edge for the pedal spindle flat, then a pedal washer is recommended (otherwise sharp edge will gouge a chunk out of your crank when tightened).

If the crank comes with the washer, fit it. Why wouldn't you?

If the cranks come with washers I fit them - why wouldn’t you? Think my Shimano slx didn’t come with them a few years back - but the alloy Raceface ones did - and all my Sram cranks did (alloy and carbon).

Yes on carbon, no on metal (but would still put them on if a set came with them).
