Was fitting a new chain to my commuter this afternoon and noticed a bit of a buckle in the back wheel, went to investigate a bit more and looks like I’ve had a lucky escape!

Anyone care to comment if this is a warranty job or not? The photos are of a selection of the cracks – there are loads more - one of them actually fell to bits when I poked it!

They’re WTB STP i19 that came with the bike – a 2017 Pinnacle Arkose (fantastic bike incidentally!) – I just use it for commuting. Probably put 4500km on it and purchased it in September 2017.

I’m guessing I should just suck it up – can’t find any info on the warranty on the bike/components (the receipt is in storage as at some point we’re moving house and have started packing). Any suggestions for a strong 700cc disc rear wheel?

Lad I sat next to at work send a WTB wheel back to Planet X with exactly that kind of damage, (but every spoke hole) a couple of weeks ago and they had a new one to him within a few days. Think his may be a 25mm rim, but it's a heluva coincidence.

Seems to be hard to buy a new disc back wheel with 32 holes.... any ideas?

If its within warranty then its a warranty job. if not then its a new wheel/rim

edit WTB rims have a 2 year warranty so shouldn't be an issue to get it replaced - email evans

Yeah I wouldn’t have expected rims to do that within 2 years. That’s crazy! Looks like they might have been over tensioned, or alternatively have just been manufactured very poorly.

4500km isn't particularly high mileage though is it, or am I expecting too much from a wheelset too? I had some Mavic rims crack around the eyelets once (although they didn't come apart as spectacularly as those WTBs), but they were years old.

My current Hope XC wheels are 18 months old and have done around 4096 miles (6541Km). It's all been fairly light, wheels very definitely on the ground, riding; perhaps I'm being hopeful but I be expecting a fair few years more out of them.

If you bought from Evans they should be able to find your purchase on your account so you shouldn’t need a receipt. No harm in asking if they’ll replace under warranty.

what rear axle do you have, was 2017 still quick release? I’ve been looking for qr 650b wheels and there seems to be a bit of a lack of them at discounted prices at least.

Just emailed Evan's. I do ride with panniers maybe the extra weight did it - tho i doubt that's any worse than riding it off road.

The rear axle is QR, Merlin do a 700cc rear wheel that'd do for 70 quid, but it's got a brake track on it (as well as a disc mount) so will look a bit poo.

Found my receipt turns out they'd emailed me a copy.... we will see what they say!

If you don't ask, you don't get. It's worth trying to warranty, but don't hold your breath.

don't say anything about the distance you've ridden or that you use panniers (assuming bike has pannier mounts so shouldn't be an issue).

why don't hold your breath?

If it's a normal j-bend spoke hub and the guarantee doesn't come through, just get a new rim built onto it. No need to try and find a whole new wheel.

Getting a wheel built will be a PITA - find someone to build it, wait two weeks, etc.

Seems it's a thing with wtb rims anyway.... https://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/wtb-frequency-i23-rim-cracks-870550.html

I had the same with the same rims on my arkose 2 albeit spotted it before it got as bad. Didn't bother with warranty as I thought it would be hard to prove after years of commuting / touring / off road. Replaced with a dt swiss e1800 wheelset with a higher weight limit.

Shouldn't really be any more troublesome than any other bike repair, any bike shop can build a simple wheel. Where are you Ewan? I'd do it for you, I even have a suitable rim you could have FOC. Only delay would be ordering the right length spokes.

Tthew - that's a very kind offer. Based near Woking.

It was more the tracking down a shop (I do my own maintenance) paying 30 quid for the wheel build and by the time you add rim and spoke cost, it's basically about a tenner cheaper than just buying a new wheel (70 quid).

Yeah - the more I think about it, the more annoyed I am really. If that back wheel had given way at 40km/h on the A329 (my commute) i'd be under a bus and that'd be the end of me...

Update from Evans: "rims are only covered for a 1 year warranty, so we would not be able to proceed with a claim for these rims."

Which is disappointing. I suspect i'll scratch this one up to experience, but semi tempted to make their life difficult via Consumer Rights act and the small claims court.

I'd push that i bit if i was you - is 12 months all a reasonable person would expect from a decent wheel especially for it to fail in a dangerous way like that one has? They can't change your consumer rights no matter what they have written in their T's & C's.

Dam, that wheel is knackered! Its interesting what you find when you look. Cant count the number of times I have spotted issues with my bikes when cleaning them.

Re the 4500km...that isn't that much. I have a set of wheels that have done 7500km of heavy road touring and they are still perfect. However they were custom made for the job, so not all that comparable I guess.

Surprised about the 12mth warranty - that seems pretty shite TBH. Was it an ex-display model?

Nope - just a normal sale. Does seem shit on a 1100 quid bike.

Any suggestions for a strong 700cc disc rear wheel?

I have some HPlus Hydra Rims on DT350 hub. LBS built them up for a reasonable price (£380 a pair)

I've abused them for a couple of years now and still going strong.

Sounds like a normal components warranty period

Thos WTB rims are warrantied for two years. Evans can't give you less of a warranty than what the company gives. I suggest writting back to them an explaining that point.

Definitely go back to Evans with the WTB warranty info. I'd still be nice at this stage as you need their help.

4500 is nothing - a friend of mine did >20,000 last year!

Wtb have come back to say it should be warrantied for two years. I will forward this to Evans.

Evans have a liability under the Consumer Rights Act, so if you're claiming under CRA then it's Evans' problem.

But if the manufacturer offers an extended warranty (2 years in this case) which you're claiming against, that's not necessarily down to Evans to honour. I'd cut out the middleman and deal direct with WTB in this case.

Is it QR front and back? Just use an "XC" style 29er wheelset instead - I've been abusing a Shimano MT35 wheelset on my Roadrat for years, with no issues whatsoever. They were cheap as chips.

Or something like - https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/WPGIROEQ/gipiemme-roccia-equipe-700c-29-inch-disc-wheelset

WTB gave me a statement to give to Evans saying it was within warranty. Evans have now come back and said they've made an error and it is in warranty and I should bring it in. Will update once they've had a look.

Just an update on the outcome of this - chased Evans, and turns out that the wheel was so screwed that someone mistook it for scrap and chucked it in the crusher. Evans recovered well by giving me a 100 quid back on the wheel set i'd bought to replace the wheel (well wheels, as i no longer trusted the front!). So good result and a thank you for sorting it in the direction of Evans...
