Warped rotor ? Temp...
 

[Closed] Warped rotor ? Temporary fixes ?

Feel a flutter through my (xt) brake levers, quick check and can only be a warped rotor. Don't have the correct tool, pliers? Mallet? Buy new? Thnx

adjustable spanner can be used, pliers are hard work but mole grips work well.

After that invest in a new one, depending on how bad it is. It's something you can walk in and buy today so no harm in trying.

I use fingers. Spin the wheel, look carefully at the gap to the pads and see where it touches. Thumbs on the hub, fingers round the disk - the kind of pressure you can apply is usually enough to bend it just a fraction, which is ideal as you can do small increments until it's straight. Gloves may be advisable if the disk edges are sharp or to avoid contaminating the rotor.

Yep, large adjustable spanner for minor tweaks. LBS has a specific tool for the job if needed.

specific(park) tool used to be pretty much an adjustable with a fixed width jaw

have seen wheel jigs with dial gauges for checking out disk true

BUT

pulsing - are you absolutely sure the pads are not touching the rotor arms(are the rotor arms polished) as ive never felt pulsing for buckled rotors. It may be that the rotor track is not the right depth for the pads

perhaps i should add - ive had severely buckled rotors in the past - inc one i dinked off a rock and put a point V shaped bend in it at dunkeld - it didnt even pulse under breaking - it did under normal rolling but not like a car rotor does only under braking.

Adjustable spanner works as well as anything. However, IME anything other than a minor warp will be very difficult to get back to straight again.

Rotors from the usual budget suspects (SS, etc) work just as well as the expensive ones, but it's a bit of an arseache when you've pringled a pricey branded rotor.

Wow, thnx all. Got it ok-ish with a sliding spanner, better anyway. Never heard the word pulsing, but yes that's what it felt like when feathering the lever. Bought a new hope rotor, bloody rivets are snagging on the adaptor, not the caliper, any suggestions welcome

Send it back, buy a superstar rotor for a tenner - floating rotors won't fit in every setup.
