Long time since i did this downhill,
going up there tomorrow, any recomendations of a good route round which brings us back down walnar scar into Conisiton...
cheers.
Out via Torver, Stephenson's Ground to do the great descent to Seathwaite before heading back. Classic ๐
Start/finish @ Torver.
Take the BW up to Walna Scar to where it intersects at Goatfoot Crags, turn left uphill and over.
Then on the way down the other side take the BW through the old quarry works below White Pike down to Natty Bridge and on to Stephenson Ground.
Turn right along the BW (Long Mire) to Seathwaite (good pub grub) and the Newfield Inn.
Pick up the Walna Scar road agin @ Hollin House Haw for the return hike`a bike.
Approx 18mls but a good day ride ๐

]shorter boggies loop[/url]
Beat me to it simon ๐
Stephensons ground will be wetter than the ocean at the moment, could be fun!
True, the track alongside the Lickle will be like a beck/burn ๐

What's the descent like from top of Walna down to Stephensons ground ?
I've done the route starting from Seathwaite>Walna>Torver>Stephensons Ground>Seathwaite and it's a good one, tough climb up Walna from Seathwaite though!
Would normally start from Torver for this route though, but was camping in Seathwaite.
You can do most of the good part of that by doing either of loweys routes, but after dropping through broughton moor forest go up the right hand side of river lickle, nice easy climb, then drop down the other side to stephensons ground. That bits good, never descended from top of walna sacr that side but I should imagine the top is just a rubbish straight speed test and the bit after the quarry to be a bit boggy for decent riding. After that you get to do the excellent descent into seathwaite aswell (parkhead road) I still reckon that if your going right to the top of walna scar you should definitley drop down coniston side. What's the descent like from top of Walna down to Stephensons ground ?
A few years ago I parked at Blawith and tried loweys second route with the additional river lickle bit but was too tired to do parkamoor, heavy bike, warm weather, fast pace, dunno what it was but my legs were gone. If you're fitter/more careful it would be a superb ride. That was a rubbish road ride back to the car ๐
stepehnson gorund a bit iffy to do then this time of year?
Trekster up walnar scar instaed of going up hummer lane?
cheers for the replys so far,
bearing in mind a few of the group aint fit ๐
also back down walnar scar i remember turning right aftere bridge somwhere to get a bettere section of downhill than the last bit of walnar scar?

Probably the BW through the old Homestead quarries to Torver? ๐
Or the one down to Bowmanstead?
Trekster up walnar scar instaed of going up hummer lane?
Not sure of that one. Where is it?
could have been the Bowmanstead one mithinks..remember crossing over a stream and getting wet,was a rocky fest after the stream. ๐
hummer lane the part of the short boggies loop you posted i think going up to stepenson's that way..
Loweys second map down is a good route, although I prefer the Bridleway/or forest track climb from Stephenson ground towards Natty Bridge past White pike and the joining the Walna Scar route,From the summitt I usually drop to the Tranearth climbing Hut Bridleway, this route Maximises the decent through the Slate mine and joining several tricky to find pathways # cough # to the pub at Torver.
Perhaps one of the Lakedistricts finest decents,(but I always say that) ๐
Next time I go I think I'll be trying:
Up the road west out of torver, follow the b.way through the woods almost until the road nr. stephenson ground, instead taking the last fireroad north upto natty bridge, once out the woods turn 180deg down the b.way south to stephenson ground
Then as per the 'classic' ride, stephenson ground to brock barrow (NW) so long as its not sodden, N down into seathwaite, N/E up the road to the base of walna scar road, E up and over walna scar road, after the bridge on the other side there are 2 rock 'gateways', the first a lump on the R, a bit of a straight drop. The 2nd a lump on the R again, but the b.way turns sharp L,R and down on jagged rocks. Walna scar road 'smoothes' off from here on
From this point cut across nearside b.way (via quarry workings) SE into torver
I've not tried the other b.way (E) into bowmanstead though, so maybe I'd give that a go instead, then permissive old railway path parallel to A road/A road back to torver
+1
Perhaps one of the Lakedistricts finest decents,(but I always say that)
Ever been on the BW that goes past the water falls rather than through the quarries?

Trekster up walnar scar instead of going up hummer lane?
Not keen on Hummer Lane, durty great road climb and then forest road climb back up to Natty Bridge....yuk. Much prefer the climb on BW from Torver and hiking the Scar for the descent on the other side. Climb one get one free ๐
the bw through Banished quarries and Trenearth is ok, but the best way to get down walna IMO is all the way to the car park, hang right at the gate, 2nd left drop down to Spoon hall,. Superb run over slippery techy rocks. Get in!
It's always been a bit boggy when I've done it in spring/summer so I'd guess it'll be worse now - it's not a long section tho.stepehnson gorund a bit iffy to do then this time of year?
I'll second that tho I fancy trying the hard to find stuff gavgas mentions, I did try one route but too many gates.but the best way to get down walna IMO is all the way to the car park, hang right at the gate, 2nd left drop down to Spoon hall
Well cheers for the suggestions,
in the end we did Trekster's route,
Start/finish @ Torver.

and finished with Lowey's rocky brdileway into Consiston.
glad i pushed up Wlanar Scar 1st to go down through the old quarries, white peak to stephenson's ground was nice section that, extra bit of down..Seathwaite decent was very good too.walanar scar is still a classic, and that final extra bw at the bottom to Consiton is worth it,kanckered still mind.
cheers. ๐

On my list of "to do again" this year, missed a lot of biking last year.
Off to the Lakes in less than 2 weeks, those Walna routes of Lowey's will make a nice variant of our normal one. Any chance of the GPX files?
