I'm sure I've read before that there's one that everyone recommends, I can't seem to find anything with the search.

I've got a Maplin one that does individual charging and discharging and can be used in a car too.

I cant remember exactly how much it cost but came with some rechargables as part of a pack so worked out very cheap. Maplin batteries are some of the best around too (well according to Which)

Another vote for the blue jobbie above, intelligent charger that does AA or AAA

I've had a BL-700 for a few years, highly recommended. Couple that with low loss batteries like Sanyo Eneloops (the only ones I now use/buy) and you're laughing.
