Saw a couple of episodes of this last night, great little program, presented by the lovely Julia Bradbury.
There was one about Helvellyn, which I walked up once, and didn't enjoy, as my knees don't like walking. But these are stunning places, which look perfect for mountain biking. Thing is, is biking allowed in such places? Or are the FC/NT claiming bikes would cause 'too much erosion' or some other lame reason to ban us?
Now, going up Helvellyn, on a bike, with Julia would be great fun. Does she ride a bike? She ought to...

You certainly can bike over helvellyn, highest "bike-legal" bridleway in england!
i saw the crinkle crags and bowfell episode with Julia this morning. I'm pretty sure you can't take a bike up there. Shame, 'the great slab' looked awesome, though i'm not sure how do-able the run off at the bottom would be!
Helvellyn is OK, as is Skiddaw and High Street. Not sure which of the other peaks are accessible. Unfortunately, the 'best' route is often not the one that bikes are allowed on.

Ooh, thanks! I'm hoping to get up to the Lakes this summer, and would love to go up Helvellyn, following a friend's denial that I could ride all the way up.I have a point to prove!
Nice to hear that you can ride a bike up such a beautiful hill. The program made the area look stunning.

you might struggle to ride all the way up and if your knees don't like walking how they going to feel with a bike on your shoulder
It's perfectly rideable.... a couple of shouldery bits but nothing too long........I'm sure SFB will help me out by posting you up a nice route or you could give us a shout when you are coming up and we can show you 😀
I know there are a few unridable bits, but it's the constant slog my knees don't like, rather than the short sharp tricky bits.
Thanks, Clarey! I shall certainly keep that in mind. I know someone in Alston, so should hopefully have a base to ride from.
I can appreciate why people enjoy walking, but can't help thinking that biking is sooo much more fun!

helvellyn's a great ride, bit of a slog up in parts (boggy on the common) but once you're up there its all good, large manmade rock steps off dollywagon pike were unridable in the most part for a no-skills rider like me, but once past the bike unfriendly manmade steps and its big fun back to glenridding
