Hi guys,

I know a few folk have struggled to find a tilting bike rack solution to use along with the T5/6 Tailgate and still be able to open the boot. I have the Atera Strada DL2 and had pretty much written it off as an option before getting my T5 van based on everything I had read online.

However, one very simple modification and it is 100% compatible with the T5 tailgate which can now be fully opened without bumping the bike rack. All that it needs is the 'bump stops' on the lower removing to allow the rack to tip back to 90* rather than the factory set 45/50*. This gives me approx 3cm clearance between the rack and tailgate.

I should also point out that I have no qualifications at all that allow me to judge the 'bump stops' disposable but my judgement is that I am willing to risk their removal in the assumption they are not in any way structurally significant!

I know the Strada DL3 which slides rather than tilts should also work as-well as a few Thule carriers (also need a slight adjustment) but this might be useful info for some VW drivers.

Can you do that with 30kg of bike attached?

Had 2 'Trail' bikes on it, no problems at all.

If the bars are mega wide it might mean you don't get the full 90* tilt though but worked OK for the bikes I had on over the festive period.

Good shout, thank you. We use one on our T4 and it won't clear the bikes grip, not a big issue as it rubber but I'll check out the bump stop thing.
