Hello, I've fitted a fair few bike tyres over the last few decades, and never been stumped until:

WTB Nano 700 x 40c (662-40)
on a
Jalco SR 240-D (622-19C)

The rim is so shallow, or maybe the bead (foldable) is so tight, that it took gloves and levers just to get the first bead on. To get the second bead on it took and my full weight (think pies), gloves, oil around the rim and straps on other parts of the rim and 3 levers. I think it's a miracle I haven't warped this rim!

I must be doing something wrong. Are they known to be tight rims? I need a break before attempting the next one. Not sure if this a request for help, or just having a moan.

I’ve never had any problem with fitting 700C Nanos so maybe it is something to do with the rims.

This rings a bell - Nanos on Hope Five20 was hard work, too. A moan is fine, problem is someone will come along and say "pffft, got em on with my bare thumbs".

I had same problem with some Goodyear Vectors on Mavic Cosmic Elite UST. Getting first bead on was so hard that I knew it was never going to work. Got the tyre on in the end but it wouldn't inflate as the bead was so tight in the rim it wouldn't move to seat.

Tried a WTB Exposure which went on with my hands and inflated with just a track pump.

Mine were same size as yours but on WTB i21 rims. Got them on with a struggle but eventual removal ended up bending the rim using the 'put wheel on floor and stand on the tyre' method.

Must be a rim / tyre combination issue. I run 29 x 2.1 Nano’s and managed to peel them off on Sunday in the mud and rain when I got a puncture. Even managed to get them to pop properly with a tiny pump - I was well impressed with that; I can’t bear an uneven bead.

I’ve got the same tyres and I had no problem getting them on at all. To put that into context I would say that I’m usually pretty bad at getting tyres on without a fuss.

I reckon you’ve got a bad tyre/rim combination.

WTB make tight beads - there are certain brands of rim they don't get on with - Stan's don't recommend using WTB on their rims.

Imagine fitting them tubeless and having a puncture that won't seal, miles from home, on a biiterly cold day! 😮

Are they the tubeless version and are you fitting them with tubes (like I do with my gravel tyres). That can cause problems getting some on.

I had some nanos, gave up after going through 3 tubes trying to fit them and sold them on. That was on a set of Hunt 4 Season wheels

WTB are an absolute nightmare. I feel your pain. Mainly in my fingertips.

Well thanks all, that makes me feel better. This afternoon I had an energy drink and managed to get second one on - not without first putting a massive scratch on the rim! little gits these tyres.

@swadan yes, with tubes, tubeless tyres but not tubeless rims.

I'll leave them on until I get my first puncture and then probably cut them off in a rage. There's zero change these could be changed on the trail. I do like them though so might look around for a more compatible set of rims. I do want two sets anyhow, just not got around to finding any yet.

Yup, WTB Nanos, might have been the TCS version, could only get one bead on a rim - Archetype. It occurred too me that if I had to reverse this, in the open, I'd be in trouble so sent them back.

I need to try and get some other tyres soon!

I'll never buy them again, can swap the DoubleDown Maxxis on my Enduro bike with hands alone, even with Rimpact but WTBs have defeated me even with levers

Glad its not just me. Fitted som wtb gravel tyres on son Arch ex's. Worst experience ever, combination of far too tight to get on the rim and kept falling off wit the golding bead, wont by again.

Conversely WTB Sendero on a DT Swiss G1800, came off with thumbs only to remove the tube, back on thumbs only after sticking a tubeless valve in, and then inflated with a track pump first time.

Don’t talk to me about tubeless Panaracer Gravel King slicks though. 😡

wtb nanos with stans arch rims, gave up total bloody nightmare... literally spent hours gettng them on! damaged rim tape, scratched rims etc so bought some panaracer gravelkings instead! much easier. Avoid that combination at all costs I would say!

Maybe WTB Nano's are bad but as I said up there both of the WTB Exposure tyres I fitted this week went on with very little fuss and also inflated and stayed up with just a track pump.

Pretty much the easiest tubeless tyres I have ever installed.

Not much help but I struggled with WTBs a while ago too (Resolutes I think) so went Vittoria. The Terreno Mix tyres I've got on at the moment seem to roll really fast but still work well in mud, seem like a good equivalent to the Nano (I think the Mezcal would be even better but not sure if it comes in narrower sizes).

Vittoria generally seem to a be a good bet for easy tubeless, I've got three sets and none of them even need tyre levers to get on or off.

It's very rim-dependent - rims that size up big and WTBs that size small spell disaster.

Yes, it is rim dependant but I would guess my rims size up big seeing that the Goodyear tubeless tyres I tried wouldn't go on at all whereas the WTB went on by just using fingers.
